Bruins Tied for Second After 36 Holes at Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. - Following a marathon, 36-hole day at the Sewailo Golf Club on Monday, the Bruins are tied for second at the Arizona Intercollegiate. As a team, UCLA is at 16-under (552), five shots back of Arizona State (-21, 547) and tied with Arizona, shooting a 5-under 279 in the morning and an 11-under 273 in the afternoon. A pair of Bruins, senior Cole Madey and junior Hidetoshi Yoshihara, are both tied for third at 7-under 135.
Madey and Yoshihara are each five strokes back of Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips (-12). Madey opened with a 1-under 70, making three birdies on No. 8, 13 and 16 and two bogeys. Madey was bogey-free in his second trip around Sewailo, recording three birdies in a row to open his round (No. 8-10), another on the 16th and back-to-back birdies on No. 4 and 5 for a 6-under 65.
Yoshihara posted a 4-under 67 in round one, making seven birdies on No. 11, 12, 18, 2, 3, 6 and 8 and three bogeys. In round two, Yoshihara had a 3-under 68 on five birdies (No. 14, 15, 4, 8 and 9) and two bogeys.
Freshman Sean Maruyama is tied for ninth at 5-under 137. He shot an even-par 71 in the morning, tallying three birdies (No. 2, 6 and 8), one bogey and one double. In his second round, Maruyama fired a 5-under 66. He made three birdies in a row (No. 16-18), as well as three more on the sixth, eighth and ninth, to go with one bogey. Sophomore Eddy Lai is tied for 55th (+3, 145), shooting an even-par 71 in round one on five birdies (No. 14, 15, 16, 6 and 7), three bogeys and one double. In round two, he posted a 3-over 74 (three birdies on No. 10, 13 and 3, four bogeys and one double). Sophomore Devon Bling is tied for 61st (+4, 146), recording a 1-over 72 in the morning (three birdies on No. 13, 16 and 6 and four bogeys) and a 3-over 74 in the afternoon (one birdie on the eighth and four bogeys).
A few miles away at the Arizona Medalist at the Randolph Golf Course, a trio of Bruins are in the Top 10 after 36 holes. Freshman Bryan Wiyang Teoh is tied for fourth at 7-under 137 following two rounds, just two shots back of leaders Will Adams (UTSA), Shamu Bodhidatta (Washington) and Jino Sohn (Arizona State). In round one, Teoh shot a 4-under 68, making six birdies on No. 1, 3, 7, 9, 13 and 14 to go with two bogeys. In his second trip around RGC, the freshman posted a 3-under 69, notching an eagle on the par-5 9th, back-to-back birdies to close his round on No. 13 and 14 and one bogey.
Seniors Jack Ireland and Patrick Murphy are both tied for 10th at 3-under 141. Ireland recorded an even-par 72 in the morning on five birdies (No. 16, 3, 7, 9 and 13) and five bogeys. He was three strokes better in the afternoon, gaining strokes on No. 16, 1, 4, 9 and 13 to go with two bogeys for a 3-under 69. Murphy fired a 4-under 68 in round one, tallying birdies on No. 3, 6, 8, 9 and 12 and only one bogey. In his second round, he was 1-over (73), producing three birdies (No. 17, 9 and 13) and four bogeys.
