UCLA Upends No. 18/19 California in Overtime, 84-79

January 04, 2019 | Women's Basketball

BERKELEY, Calif. – Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere tied a career high with 29 points and had the game-tying basket in regulation, and the UCLA women's hoops team ultimately upset No. 18/19 California in overtime 84-79 on Friday night at Haas Pavilion.

On a free throw miss, Onyenwere found position inside and scored a put-back with 17.5 seconds left, and UCLA (9-5, 2-0) outscored Cal 13-8 and outrebounded the Bears 6-0 in overtime to notch its sixth win in a row and first road win over a ranked opponent this season.

Onyenwere's 29 points came on 12-for-22 shooting, and she knocked down a trio of 3-pointers for the second straight game. Senior Kennedy Burke posted 19 points to go along with six boards and five steals, while senior Lajahna Drummer added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Senior Japreece Dean tied a career high with seven dimes, and sophomore Lauryn Miller came off the bench to register a career-high four blocks.

The Storyline
The opening 10 minutes was back and forth, featuring 10 lead changes. UCLA led by as many as four in the frame, getting a driving layup from sophomore Chantel Horvat to take an 11-7 lead at the 4:27 mark. Onyenwere used a steady mid-range game to score nine first-quarter points and put UCLA up 17-16 after one.

The Bruins mixed up their defense in the second quarter, issuing a full-court press and suffocating half-court defense to force four Cal turnovers in a two-minute stretch and spark a 7-0 run to go up 31-24 after a layup by Miller.

Although the Bears managed to cut the Bruin lead to two (33-31), UCLA capped the first half with a 9-1 run, getting a 3-pointer from redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro to take a 42-32 lead into the locker room.

UCLA shot 50 percent (18-for-36) in the first half and forced 11 Bear turnovers, converting those into 10 points.

Two highlight-reel plays for the Bruins helped them extend their lead to 12 (48-36) in the third, as Dean launched a perfect floating pass to Onyenwere on the break and then Burke scored through contact inside.

Onyenwere swooshed a 3-point jumper to make it 51-40 UCLA with 6:33 left in the third, but the Bears (9-3, 0-1) fired back with a 15-2 run to cap the frame.

With UCLA down 59-55, Drummer used a spin move inside to muster the and-one and spark an 8-0 run, capped by a left-handed scoop from Burke and 3-pointer from Onyenwere on the left wing.

But the Bruins missed their next five from the field, allowing the Bears to go back up 67-64. Trailing 71-69, Onyenwere found herself all alone on a Bruin free throw miss and scored the game-tying put-back with 17.5 on the clock, and UCLA got a stop on the other end to force overtime.

In overtime, Drummer issued a strong take to the hoop to put UCLA up 74-71, and then Burke scored on the Bruins' next possession to make it a five-point game. Cal got as close as one twice with less than 90 seconds left, but the Bruins had the answer, going 6-for-6 from the line to ice it.
