UCLA’s Upset Bid at No. 6/8 Stanford Falls Short, 86-80

January 06, 2019 | Women's Basketball

STANFORD, Calif. – The UCLA women's basketball team outscored No. 6/8 Stanford in three quarters on Sunday afternoon, but a 26-12 third frame in favor of the Cardinal propelled it to an 86-80 win over the Bruins at Maples Pavilion.

The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for UCLA (9-6, 2-1), which led 45-38 at halftime and drained a season-high 11 3-pointers.

Senior Japreece Dean eclipsed the 20-point mark for the third time this season, finishing with 22 points on 10-for-17 shooting to go along with four assists and four rebounds.

Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere collected her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Lindsey Corsaro and Kennedy Burke added 14 and 11 points, respectively.

The Storyline
UCLA opened the game on fire, hitting seven of its first 10 from the field, including a trio of three's, to take a 17-6 lead, as Dean capped a 13-0 Bruin run with a trey on the left wing. The Cardinal outscored the Bruins by 10 (17-7) for the remainder of the first quarter, trimming UCLA's lead to one (24-23).

Freshman Ahlana Smith gave UCLA the spark it needed in the second quarter, as the North Carolina native scored seven straight points in a 65-second stretch to extend the Bruin lead to 40-29.

The Bruins entered the locker room up 45-38, shooting 52.9 percent (18-for-34) from the field and 77.8 percent (7-for-9) from 3-point range.

Despite getting a baseline jumper from Onyenwere and corner trey from Drummer, Stanford opened the second half hot, making 6-of-7 field goals to anchor an 18-3 run to go up 56-50.

Stanford (12-1, 2-0) led by as many as nine in the third frame, as the Bruins shot just 21.1 percent in the quarter to face a 64-57 deficit entering the fourth quarter.

After falling behind by 10 (72-62), the Bruins began to trim into the Cardinal lead, getting jumpers from Onyenwere and Drummer to pull within six. Corsaro answered a Cardinal three with one of her own, and then Dean nailed a fade-away to cut it to four (75-71).

A pair of free throws from Onyenwere made it a one-possession contest (75-73), but Stanford's Kiana Williams responded with her third 3-pointer of the day, followed by another from Alyssa Jerome to make it 81-75 Stanford.

Corsaro nailed UCLA's 11th three of the day before the Cardinal got another bucket on the other end to keep its distance.
