Bolton, Hart Earn Big Wins at All-Americans
October 13, 2019 | Women's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. โ Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart of the UCLA women's tennis team shined on a national stage at the ITA All-American Championships, notching ranked singles and doubles wins over four days at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center and the Case Tennis Center at LaFortune Park.
Bolton posted four wins in three days to reach the quarterfinal round of the singles draw, while Hart bowed out in the round of 32. The Bruins also paired up in the doubles draw, where they bounced back from a first-round loss to reach the consolation final round.
Following a run to the final round at Oracle ITA Masters in her first action of the fall, No. 9 Hart had an impressive start to All-Americans action. Facing off against Mia Horvit of South Carolina, Hart fended off the nation's 49th-ranked player in a close first set before taking charge in the second. The 7-5, 6-2 victory gave Hart her second win versus a ranked opponent on the young season. Hart's time in the singles bracket ended one round later, however, as she was dealt a 6-1, 6-3 loss by No. 40 Alana Smith of NC State.
No. 16 Bolton also got her time started with a win versus a ranked opponent, dispatching of No. 120 Rebeka Mertena of Tennessee, 6-0, 7-6(2), in the opening round. Next up was highly-touted freshman Natasha Subhash of Virginia, who took Bolton to three sets. The Bruin ultimately prevailed, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Her run continued Friday, when she dispatched of 37th-ranked Vivian Wolff of Georgia, 6-3, 7-5, to earn a quarterfinal-round spot on berth into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. Bolton's second match Friday proved to be her last of the tournament, as she fell to Duke's Chloe Beck, 7-5, 6-4.
The fourth-ranked combination of Bolton and Hart was pitted against No. 20 Sara Daavettila and Alexa Graham of North Carolina in a first-round doubles contest that proved very evenly matched. The first-to-eight showdown ended in a tiebreaker, which the Tar Heels captured by a 7-4 score.
Bolton and Hart did not go quietly, though, responding with an 8-4 defeat of Oklahoma's Jasmine Asghar and Oleksandra Korashvili. Next up was Wake Forest's tandem of Anna Brylin and Saby Nihalani, which proved overmatched in an 8-2 Bolton/Hart win. The Bruin duo's premier win of the week came in the semifinal round, where it rolled to an 8-2 win against 11th-ranked Lauren Alter and Tatum Rice of Arkansas. Bolton and Hart would have to settle for runner-up status in the consolation bracket, though, as they came up short against Jaeda Daniela and Adriana Reami of NC State, 8-2.
