BRUINS HIT THE ROAD FOR FIRST TIME SINCE LATE SEPTEMBER
This week, the UCLA men's soccer team (5-8-2, 1-5-1) travels to the Bay Area to take on Pac-12 rivals California and Stanford. The Bruins will battle Cal (6-4-2, 2-2-1) on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. and Stanford (10-1-2, 3-1-1) at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, both will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. UCLA is playing a road game for the first time since Sept. 22. Fans can follow along with live stats on UCLABruins.com and by following @UCLAMSoccer on Twitter.
WEEK IN REVIEW
UCLA suffered a pair of one-goal defeats last week, falling 1-0 to No. 1 Washington on Thursday before getting edged 3-2 by Oregon State on Sunday in the home finale at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Opportunities were few and far between for both teams in the UW game, and a break for the Huskies turned out to be the difference as a deflected cross went right into the path of Blake Bodily in front of an open net in the 65th minute for the contest's lone goal. UCLA outshot OSU 15-5 in the Sunday loss, and received goals from Milan Iloski and Matthew Powell.
SPOOKY STUFF
This Thursday marks just the ninth time ever and first time since 2009 that UCLA will be playing on Halloween. The Bruins have posted a 6-1-1 mark in the eight previous contests, with the most recent matchup resulting in a 1-0 loss to Creighton.
EARLY STARTERS
Early goals have been a common occurence in UCLA games so far this season. A goal has been scored by either UCLA or the opponent within the opening 10 minutes in nine of UCLA's 15 games this year (60%).
TOUGH ROAD
Entering the week, UCLA can boast that it has the toughest schedule in the country. The Bruins lead the NCAA in both past opponents' winning percentage (.647) and cumulative opponents' winning percentage (.633). UCLA's road only gets slightly easier the rest of the way, with the team's future opponents combining for a .556 winning percentage. No other west coast team is in the top-10 for strength of schedule, with the nearest program being UC Irvine (.597, No. 13). UCLA has played half of the top-10 teams in this week's TopDrawerSoccer rankings (No. 1 Washington, No. 2 Georgetown, No. 6 Maryland, No. 7 Stanford, No. 9 Indiana).
BRUINS HELPING BRUINS
UCLA has scored 25 goals so far this season, accruing 30 assists along the way. The Bruins' 1.2 assists per goal is tied for fifth-best in the nation (Michigan leads the NCAA at 1.4). UCLA has recorded at least one assist on 21 of 25 team goals, including nine tallies with two assists.
ILOSKI MAKES HISTORY AGAINST SDSU
Milan Iloski made school history on Oct. 6 in a contest against San Diego State, scoring a program-record five goals in a 5-2 win for UCLA.
Thanks to a five-game scoring streak out of the gate and a five-goal performance against SDSU, UCLA junior forward Milan Iloski has now taken over the national lead in a number of categories.
After going unnamed in the TopDrawerSoccer preseason player rankings, Milan Iloski was placed at No. 7 in the soccer outlet's midseason update. In addition, left back Constantinos Michaelides was tabbed as the No. 58 player in the TDS Freshman Top-100. Michaelides has recorded one goal and one assist over 15 games, and has racked up 905 minutes on the pitch so far.
FERCH ON FIRE
Sophomore midfielder Riley Ferch has come into his own in the second half of the season, posting six assists and eight points over his last seven games. That stretch includes multi-assist performances against SDSU and Cal and a three-point game against UC Riverside featuring his first NCAA goal. Overall on the year, he has one goal, eight assists, and 10 points. His eight helpers lead the Pac-12, rank 11th nationally, and are the most by a Bruin in a single season since Jackson Yueill had 11 in 2016.
RED-HOT OCTOBER
The Bruins have stepped up their offensive production since the calendar turned to October, potting 14 goals in seven games. That stretch features a trio of games with three or more goals including a season-high five scores against San Diego State. UCLA's 2.0 goals per game for the month of October is a solid increase from the 1.38 GPG clip from the first eight contests of the year. No Pac-12 squad has more goals than UCLA this month.
ILOSKI TO ILOSKI
Junior midfielder Eric Iloski has earned the primary assist on three of his brother's goals this year - his opening goals against Maryland and CSUN as well as his third goal against SDSU. The brothers have now recorded a point on the same goal on four occasions - Milan and elder brother Brian assisted on an Eric goal against San Diego State on Oct. 15, 2017.
SETTING IT UP
Entering the week, the Bruins have four players with four or more assists on the year. Riley Ferch has a team-high eight, while Matt Powell, Cody Sundquist, and Eric Iloski all have a career-high four. UCLA is the only program in the Pac-12 that can boast four players with 4+ assists. Overall, UCLA ranks second in the league and 22nd nationally with 30 assists.
SAVES THE DAY
UCLA sophomore keeper Justin Garces has tallied 44 saves so far this season, a figure which leads the Pac-12 and represents an individual single-season career-high. The Miami, Fla. native has made three or more saves in eight games this year, including a career-high seven in the season-opener against Northwestern.
