Head men's golf coach Derek Freeman has announced that Tyler Griggs (Manteca, Calif./East Union HS) and Alvaro Mueller-Baumgart (Malaga, Spain/English International College) have signed National Letters of Intent with UCLA.
Griggs is a two-time Valley Oak League Most Valuable Player at East Union High School, as well as the 2018 All-District Golfer of the Year. Since 2018, he has placed in the Top 10 in four AJGA events, including a second-place showing at the '18 AJGA Junior at Yolo Fliers and a fifth-place finish at the 2019 AJGA Lake Las Vegas Junior hosted by Danielle Kang. In his younger days, Griggs, a distant relative of famous amateur golfer Francis Ouimet, participated in the 2016 Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club.
"Ty has been a player we have loved since we first began following him as a junior golfer," Freeman said. "He has played well all over the country with multiple wins and great finishes. Ty has tremendous upside considering his phenomenal foundation in golf. The progression of Ty's game will continue nicely at UCLA and he is going to help us win more championships. It is going to be fun to watch all the success that Ty has at UCLA."
Mueller-Baumgart, the 13th-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, has had a very successful 2019. He has won the FinnishGolf.com Open, the Campeonato de Espana U18, the Campeonato de Espana Amateur and the Campeonato Internacional de Espana U18. Mueller-Baumgart also has Top 10s at the Memorial Norberto Goizueta (second), the Spanish Amateur Copa S M El Rey (third), the Copa Andalucia (fourth), the Campeonato de Barcelona (seventh) and the Copa Nacional Puerta de Hierro (ninth). Along with playing in the 2019 U.S. Amateur, Mueller-Baumgart, while representing Spain, has participated in the Campeonato Espana de Federaciones Autonomicas, the European Boys' Team Championship (Jean-Louis Dupont Trophy) and the Jacques Leglise Trophy.
"Alvaro is a special player whose talents have allowed him to be very accomplished," Freeman said. "He has developed into a player with great technique in all aspects of his game. Alvaro will play a major part of our team as we move forward. The commitment to have a great education is something that was important to him and his family. We are excited about being part of Alvaro's continued success here at UCLA."
