Late Sundquist Goals Gives UCLA 1-0 Win at SDSU

November 16, 2019 | Men's Soccer

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Sophomore midfielder Cody Sundquist scored with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to give the UCLA men's soccer team a thrilling 1-0 victory over San Diego State on Saturday evening at SDSU Sports Deck.

With the win, UCLA concludes the 2019 season with a 6-9-3 record. SDSU meanwhile finishes with a 4-12-2 mark.

SDSU Sports Deck is turning out to be a magical venue for Sundquist, who has recorded the game-winning goal in both of his career trips to the stadium. Last year, Sundquist logged an overtime score for his first career goal as part of a 2-1 Bruin win.

Redshirt senior Matt Powell, in his final collegiate game, started the play that resulted in the Bruins' game-winning goal by playing a sharp pass down the right wing for senior forward Blayne Martinez – also in his final game – in the final third.

With his defender closing, Martinez sent in a cross to the far post once he reached the edge of the box. An SDSU defender knocked down the ball at the far post just inches away from the end line, but Sundquist quickly pounced on the loose ball and knocked it in past SDSU keeper Max Watkin for the game's lone goal.

The two teams ended the contest tied in shots at 12-12, though the Bruins bested the Aztecs in the shots-on-goal department by a margin of 5-2.

Before Sundquist's tally, UCLA had the game's best chance to score.

In the 30th minute, junior forward Milan lloski's press on the back line resulted in a deflection that led to a breakaway for Iloski. Once he was in the box, Iloski was dragged down from behind for a penalty kick. Iloski stepped up to take the spot kick himself, but the effort was turned aside by Watkin.

Iloski led the team with four shots on Saturday, though senior midfielder Alexis Triadis (three shots) and Sundquist (two) weren't far behind.

UCLA sophomore keeper Justin Garces made a pair of stops to record his second clean sheet of the year.
