KOHALA, Hawaii - Freshman Annabel Wilson made a hole-in-one on Monday, while freshman Emma Spitz is solo third after 18 holes, as the Bruins are in second place following the first day of the Nanea Pac-12 Preview at the Nanea Golf Club.
UCLA shot a 7-under 285 as a team and sits three strokes back of first-place Arizona (-10, 282).
Spitz fired a 4-under 69 on the par-73 layout and is one shot back of Arizona's Therese Warner and Oregon's Amy Matsuoka (-5, 68). Starting on the first hole, Spitz made birdies on No. 1 and 5 before making her lone bogey on No. 8. The freshman finished with a flourish, making birdies on three of her last four holes (No. 15, 17 and 18) to put her in third place.
Senior Mariel Galdiano is tied for seventh following a 2-under 71. She birdied her initial hole in the shotgun start, the fifth, as well as No. 13, 16 and 18 to go with two bogeys. Senior Clare Legaspi is tied for 13th, shooting a 1-under 72. She made a birdie on No. 5, and back-to-back birdies on No. 16 and 17, with two bogeys.
Wilson ended up with an even-par 73 and is tied for 19th. On the eighth hole, which was playing at 145 yards, Wilson hit a three-quarters, 7-iron to three feet in front of the pin. It took one bounce past the cup, then spun back into the hole for an ace. She had it at 3-under at one point following birdies on No. 10, 14 and 18, while she also made a bogey and two doubles in her round. Freshman Ty Akabane also shot an even-par 73. She rebounded from three bogeys and a double in her first eight holes to make three consecutive birdies on No. 12, 13 and 14. Akabane then made another birdie on No. 16 before finishing her round with one on No. 1.
