The No. 4 UCLA men's volleyball team dropped a five-setter at No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in a non-league match on Wednesday night. Scores were 18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 12-15. The decision snapped a Bruin five-match win streak on the year. It was UCSB's ninth straight win. UCLA was led by season-high kill efforts from Sam Kobrine (11) and Grant Maleski (9). The Bruins, now 10-3 on the year, will return to action on Saturday night in another non-league battle at top-ranked Long Beach State.
In set one, UCSB used a strong serve to establish a 3-8 lead. UCLA closed to 7-9 after a kill from Austin Matautia. The Gauchos then spurted out to an 11-15 edge. A kill from Micah Ma'a made it 14-17. UCSB regained the momentum and opened up a 16-22 gap. The Bruins saved one set point at the end, but the Gauchos soon claimed a 18-25 win. UCLA hit .133 for the set to .524 for the Gauchos.
The Bruins broke a 4-all tie with three straight points on a kill by Daenan Gyimah, a Grant Maleski ace and a Matautia swing. A Maleski kill made it 24-18 and the Bruins brought home the set at 25-21 after a service error.
In the third set, UCSB spurted to a 3-7 advantage. UCLA moved to within one, at 6-7, following a kill by Sam Kobrine. UCSB responded with the next four points to take control at 6-11.
