MVB Goes Down in Three

February 16, 2019 | Men's Volleyball

The No. 4-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team lost a straight set decision at top-ranked Long Beach State on Saturday night in the Walter Pyramid. Scores were 20-25, 17-25, 19-25.  It was the 33rd straight win in the Pyramid for the 49ers who totaled a Bruin opponent season-best of 12 aces in the match. UCLA, which is now 10-4 on the year, will return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play next Wednesday with a match at Concordia in Irvine. The Bruins return home a week from this Sunday to host No. 14 USC at 5 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion, presented by Wescom.

In set one, the Bruins took an early 4-2 lead behind a couple of kills from Sam Kobrine. The score was then tied at points four through 8. Long Beach put two scores together on a kill and an ace to go up 8-10. After another ace, the 49ers increased the margin to 10-13. UCLA closed within one at 13-14, after an Austin Matautia kill, and 18-19, following a swing by Brandon Rattray. Long Beach responded with a kill and an ace to open another three-point gap. A Long Beach block advanced the home team to set point and the Bruins' eighth service error of the set supplied the home team the deciding point at 20-25. Rattray and Gyimah each had four kills in the frame. Both teams hit over .400 for the set.

The score was tied at points six, on a kill by Rattray, and seven, after a Micah Ma'a kill, in the early going of set two. Long Beach then grabbed an 8-10 lead after a Bruin service error. The 49ers ripped off four aces in a stretch of six points to take an 11-17 edge. UCLA battled back to cut the deficit to 16-20 following a kill by Rattray only to see Long Beach tally five of the next six points for the win. UCLA hit .050 for the set with seven errors. Long Beach hit .353 for the set and added five more aces.

Long Beach surged to a 2-8 advantage to begin set three. The 49ers kept the momentum going to open up gaps of 4-12 and 8-18. UCLA closed to 15-20 after a Long Beach error and then 16-21 following a Gyimah kill. A swing from Ma'a made it 18-23, but Long Beach tallied two kills for a 19-25 win. UCLA hit .259 for the set to .524 for Long Beach State, which had three aces.

For the match, UCLA hit .260, while Long Beach was at .404. It marked the third time this season an opponent had hit at least .400 against the Bruins. The 49ers owned a 6.0 to 2.0 edge at the nets in total blocks. Gyimah led UCLA with 9 kills and hit .692. Brandon Rattray added eight kills.
