MPSF Indoor Track & Field Championships on Tap This Weekend

LOS ANGELES โ Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field (MPSF) will celebrate its 27th year of competition this weekend, and the championships will take place at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor Center for the 17th consecutive season.

UCLA will head to Seattleย in search for its seventh MPSF title on the men's side and first-ever championship for the women. It's been a successful indoor campaign thus far for UCLA, as the Bruins have shattered two school records and seen several indoor PR's.

Schedule of Events
The MPSF Indoor Championships will begin on Friday at noon (PT) with the women's weight throw and will conclude at 7:25 p.m. with the men's distance medley relay. The first event Saturday takes off at 10 a.m. with the women's high jump, while the men's 4x400m relay will end this year's championship meet at 2:55 p.m.

The MPSF Championships features 22 universities comprised from members of the Pac-12, Big West, and West Coast Conferences. Thirty-seven teams will compete for a conference title, matching last year's record total, 22 for the women and 15 for the men.

Last Meet
UCLA competed at the Last Chance College Elite Meet on Feb. 15 in Seattle and was led by a second-place finish from Tate Curran in the pole vault.

Elleyse Garrett opened the day for the Bruins and took fourth in the pole vault after clearing 3.98m (13-0.75).

Curran represented UCLA in the men's pole vault, taking second place after he cleared 4.99m (16-4.5) on his first attempt.

To cap the meet, the foursome of Cameron Stone, Riley Kelly, Carter Blunt and Arturo Sotomayor took fourth in the distance medley relay, crossing the finish line at the 9:34.63 mark, which is the fourth-fastest time in program history.ย

Guttormsen, Wilson Own Top Marks
Both freshman Sondre Guttormsen (pole vault) and sophomore Alyssa Wilson (weight throw) are the frontrunners in their respective events and hold the top marks among MPSF performers entering the MPSF Indoor Championships. Guttormsen, who broke UCLA's indoor record in his collegiate debut at the Columbia Challenge, topped his own record a couple weeks later at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, clearing 5.73m (18-9.5). Meanwhile, Wilson has been lethal in the weight throw, collecting three first-place finishes during the indoor season and recording the second-best throw (22.23m) in Bruin history.

Sweet 16
The top 16 performers qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, and UCLA has three athletes so far who make the cut. Alyssa Wilson is destined to qualify in two events โ the shot put (17.73m) and weight throw (22.23m), where she sits second and sixth overall, respectively. Sondre Guttormsen's stardom in the pole vault (5.73m) has him at No. 3 overall in the event, while Robert Brandt (13:40.82) owns the 12th-fastest time in the 5000m.ย

Bruins in the Polls
While the UCLA women remained idle in the latest NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index (Feb. 18) at No. 25, the men slipped seven spots to No. 30.
