UCLA Overcomes 22-Point Deficit to Upset No. 2 Oregon, 74-69

February 22, 2019 | Women's Basketball

EUGENE, Ore. – Led by a career-high 29 points from senior Kennedy Burke, the UCLA women's basketball team used a 22-point comeback to stun No. 2 Oregon, 74-69, in front of 8,858 fans at Matthew Knight Arena on Friday night.

Burke, who shot 12-for-17 and had eight rebounds, pulled down perhaps the biggest board with just 12 seconds remaining. On a Bruin free throw miss and UCLA up three (72-69), Burke beat the Oregon defender and rose for the offensive rebound to earn two more at the line for the visiting team.

She calmly knocked down both, icing the triumph for UCLA.

Senior Japreece Dean played big in the second half, scoring 10 of her 14 points during that stretch. She also had a career-high nine assists and went 4-for-4 from the line.

Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere had 10 second-half points as well to finish with 12, while redshirt senior Lajahna Drummer collected a game-high 11 boards.

UCLA (17-10, 10-5), which secured the biggest win in program history since knocking off No. 2 Stanford in 2008, shot 54.8 percent in the second half and ultimately outrebounded Oregon (24-3, 13-2), who lost its first home game of the season.

The Storyline
UCLA scored on its first possession, getting a 3-pointer from Burke to spark a 5-2 run, but Oregon responded with a 13-2 run, helping the Ducks go up by eight.

Freshman Ahlana Smith buried a triple on the right wing to pull UCLA within four (14-10) before the Ducks scored nine of the last 11 points to take a 23-12 advantage into the second frame.

Oregon shot 62.5 percent (10-for-16) in the first quarter and forced six Bruin turnovers.

Onyenwere got herself on the board with a turn-around jumper early in the second quarter.

Oregon stretched its lead to as many as 22 before UCLA responded with a 7-0 run to pull within 15 at the break.

Burke led all scorers with 14 points at halftime, as she scored from inside and out, with the right or the left.

UCLA opened the second half with a 5-0 run, which included a 3-pointer from redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro, to pull within 10.

Corsaro knocked down another one to pull within single digits (48-39) midway through the third quarter.

The Bruins continued to chip away, holding Oregon scoreless for the final 2:47 of the frame and outscoring the Ducks 21-11 to pull within five (53-48).

A 9-0 UCLA run put the Bruins up 59-56 early in the fourth quarter, as Burke found Onyenwere on the run for the fastbreak bucket.

Back-to-back buckets by Burke put UCLA up five, and then Dean swooshed a dagger to make it 68-60 Bruins with 3:46 left.

Six straight from the Ducks made it a one-possession game (68-66) with under a minute to go before Onyenwere got the friendly roll inside.

Free throws by Onyenwere and Burke gave UCLA its final count of 74, and the Bruins got stops down the stretch to walk away with the résumé-building win.
