UCLA Drops Heartbreaker to No. 12 Oregon State, 75-72

February 24, 2019 | Women's Basketball

CORVALLIS, Ore. โ€“ The UCLA women's basketball team nearly spoiled Senior Day for No. 12 Oregon State before falling to the Beavers in the final seconds, 75-72.
ย
UCLA (17-11, 10-6) had a chance to tie it in the final seconds, but the open look on the right wing came up short. Despite the setback, UCLA remains in fourth place in the Pac-12 standings.
ย
Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere led four Bruins in double figures with 19 points, 17 of which came in the first half. She also had 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season.
ย
Redshirt senior Lajahna Drummer collected her 10th career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and seniors Kennedy Burke and Japreece Dean added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
ย
In 14 minutes off the bench, freshman Kiara Jefferson scored eight points.
ย
The Storyline
UCLA scored 10 of its first 12 points in the paint, helping the Bruins charge to an early 12-9 lead after a banker by Drummer at the 5:08 mark.
ย

The Bruins hit four of their last eight from the field to close the quarter, helping them to a 20-13 advantage after one thanks to a turn-around jumper by Onyenwere.
ย

Oregon State (23-5, 13-3) opened the second quarter with a 10-3 run to tie it before Onyenwere connected from the left wing to put UCLA back up three (26-23).ย
ย

ย
The remaining 4:45 of the quarter would see three ties and one lead change โ€“ that change propelling the Beavers to a 39-35 halftime advantage. On UCLA's final possession, Jefferson banked home a triple, one of three 3-pointers for the Bruins in the first half.
ย

ย
Despite starting the second half 3-for-13, UCLA hung around thanks to some hard work on the glass, collecting eight offensive rebounds in the opening 5:25.
ย

Five straight from the Bruins, capped by a 3-pointer from redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro, put UCLA up 49-48 late in the quarter.
ย

Dean pulled up on the run and drained a 3-pointer to put UCLA up two (54-52) before Oregon State took advantage of three offensive rebounds on its end to tie the affair.
ย

A 7-0 Beaver run put a seven-point lead in the hands of the home team before Onyenwere scored above the Oregon State defender to pull within five (64-59).
ย

ย
UCLA continued to chip away, getting a pull-up jumper at the free throw line from Burke and then a layup to pull within one (64-63).
ย

With the shot clock winding down, Dean swooshed a deep 3-pointer to tie the game at 68 apiece.
ย

ย
Oregon State responded with a layup on the other end and then got a defensive stop before hitting a dagger on the right wing to go up five.
ย
Following a put-back by Drummer, the Beavers went 0-for-2 from the stripe, giving UCLA one last chance to tie it. The Bruins got a decent look at a 3-pointer, but the shot grazed the front of the iron.
