UCLA Rallies to Defeat Oregon 90-83
February 23, 2019 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES โ Jaylen Handsย scored all of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead the UCLA men's basketball team past Oregon, 90-83, in a Pac-12 game on Saturday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
ย
Hands' incredible second half outburst helped UCLA (15-13, 8-7 Pac-12) erase a 19-point deficit after halftime. The Bruins used a 17-0 scoring run during a four-minute stretch to secure their first lead of the game, 55-53, with 10:36 to play in regulation.
ย
UCLA outscored Oregon by a 62-39 margin in the second half.
ย
Jules Bernardย registered a career-high 20 points off the bench, giving the freshman double-digit scoring performances in five of the last six games.
ย
Kris Wilkesย added 20 points to give UCLA three 20-point scorers for the first time in a game since Feb. 4, 2017 (at Washington โ Lonzo Ball, Bryce Alford, Aaron Holiday and TJ Leaf).
ย
Jalen Hillย tallied eight points and had a team-leading eight rebounds off the bench.
ย
Hands made seven of 10 attempts from 3-point range, helping the Bruins record their best 3-point total of the season (14 for 22 from 3-point distance). UCLA nailed 10 of 13 long-range attempts in the second half.
ย
"Oregon certainly had our attention coming in," UCLA interim head coachย Murry Bartow said. "Dana Altman is a great coach and they really put it on us in the first half. Fortunately, we just made a lot of plays in the second half. Played about as well as we can. Then I thought the energy in the building kind of took over and really helped our guys."
ย
Payton Pritchard and Paul White each scored 18 points, leading five Oregon players who scored in double figures. Pritchard added eight assists.
ย
Oregon's Kenny Wooten recorded 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds, as the Ducks (15-12, 6-8 Pac-12) made 11 of 30 attempts from 3-point range. Oregon converted just 3 of their 17 attempts from 3-point distance in the second half.
ย
The visiting Ducks opened the game by making their first four shots, including three from beyond the 3-point arc, to secure an 11-2 cushion. UCLA evened the game at 15-15, 17-17 and 20-20, before Oregon raced ahead. The Ducks continued their hot shooting throughout the first half, knocking down 17 of 27 shot attempts, en route to a 44-26 halftime lead.
ย
A Pritchard 3-pointer to open the second half increased Oregon's lead to a game-high 19 points. UCLA immediately answered with an 8-0 scoring run, trimming the Ducks' cushion to just 11 points.
ย
Will Richardson converted a pair of free throws to extend Oregon's advantage back to 15. UCLA held Oregon scoreless over the next 5:05 of the second half.
ย
Alex Olesinski's layup helped to trigger UCLA's sensational 17-0 scoring run. The Bruins closed that scoring spree by securing a 55-53 lead. Hands served as the catalyst for the Bruins, as he knocked down three consecutive 3-point baskets and, in all, accounted for 13 points.
ย
"It felt good," Hands said. "I have to give the credit to my teammates for it. They were setting good screens, the bigs got the ball out after rebounds, and Jules and Kris stepped up when I got off the ball. It was really a product of my teammates helping me get there."
ย
The Bruins never trailed the rest of the game and led by as many as 12 points. Hands totaled 27 points in the second half, while Wilkes scored 13 and Bernard had 12. That trio combined by 52 of UCLA's 62 second-half points.
UCLA will close its home schedule against crosstown rival USC on Thursday, Feb. 28. Game time is 6 p.m. (PT) in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins' game against USC will be nationally televised on ESPN.
