No. 8 UCLA Triumphs at Tulsa 4-0

February 03, 2019 | Women's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. โ€“ The No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team completed a successful first road trip, blanking Tulsa 4-0 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The win marked the Bruins' second of the weekend, as they handled No. 9 Oklahoma State Saturday.

Elysia Bolton turned in her second clinching victory of the trip, taking control on the top court. UCLA claimed the doubles point for the fourth time in as many dual matches and Ayan Broomfield and Taylor Johnson added singles wins to help the Bruins improve to 4-0 heading into ITA National Team Indoor Championships play. The Hurricane dropped to 6-4.

With Courts 1 and 3 locked in tight battles, UCLA's Court 2 duo of 12th-ranked Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart set the tone. After trading the first two games with Martha Matoula and Shura Poppe, Bolton-Hart took off, failing to relinquish another on the way to a 6-1 win. The triumph marked Bolton's fourth in as many dual-match tries and third with Hart.

Knotted at three games apiece on Court 3, Abi Altick and Taylor Johnson of the Bruins took charge down the stretch. The pair seized the final three games, fending off a tandem of Marina Davtyan and Megan Hopton that made no point easy. Altick-Johnson is 2-0 as a combination, with both wins coming in a clinching fashion.

The top-10 battle pitting No. 6 Broomfield-Gabby Andrews against No. 4 Martina Okalova-Vera Ploner lived up to its top-court billing, with Okalova-Ploner leading 4-3 at the time of the Bruins' clinching.

The Bruins controlled singles play, winning each first set. Five of six opening frames concluded with 6-1 or 6-2 scores. Johnson and Broomfield's convincing showings continued into their second sets, with the freshman first off the singles courts.

Johnson defeated Hopton 6-2, 6-2 to add a singles win to her earlier doubles success. Nearly simultaneously, Broomfield completed the first dual-match singles match of her season in impressive manner, defeating Poppe 6-2, 6-0 to pull the Bruins closer to victory.

Once again, No. 11 Bolton provided the heroics. The Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. native's serve was too hot to handle, completing a 6-2, 6-3 win over Okalova on the top court to continue an unblemished start to her collegiate dual-match career.

Next up for the Bruins is a trip to Seattle for ITA Indoors. Play from the Seattle Tennis Club begins Friday, Feb. 8 and continues through Monday, Feb. 11.
