HONOLULU, Hawaii - Junior Bubba Nickles and sophomore Briana Perez each had four hits in Thursday's doubleheader, while the Bruin pitching trio of redshirt junior Rachel Garcia, sophomore Holly Azevedo and freshman Megan Faraimoย struck out 17 and gave up just four hits in 14 innings, as No. 1 UCLA defeated UT Arlington, 2-1, and Fresno State, 8-2, on opening day of the 2019 season.
In game one versus the Mavericks, Nickles would drive in the Bruins' only two runs. In the bottom of the first, Perez led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by freshman Kelli Godin and scored on a Nickles single to left-center. In the bottom of the fourth, Nickles led things off with a home run to center to put the Bruins up 2-0.
In her first collegiate start, Faraimo struck out six in 5 1/3 innings, giving up one run, two hits and four walks. She had 1-2-3 innings in the third and fifth and two strikeouts in both the second and fourth. Her biggest moment of the game came after she allowed a pair of infield singles and a walk to open the top of the fourth. But Faraimoย recorded strikeouts of the next two hitters and a fly out to right to end UT Arlington's threat.
The Mavericks got on the board in the sixth without the benefit of a hit, as a walk, a hit by pitch and a pair of fielder's choices made it 2-1. Garcia would come in and earn the save, putting out four of the five players she retired by strikeout.
Just like in game one, Nickles and Perez had two hits in game two versus the Bulldogs. Seniors Taylor Pack and Zoe Shaw also provided two-hit contests, as the Bruins had 12 hits from eight different players.ย
Azevedo tied a career high with seven strikeouts in a complete-game victory. She gave up two runs, three hits and two walks. Azevedo posted 1-2-3 frames in the third, fourth and seventh and two strikeouts in the fifth and sixth.
The difference in the game was the Bruins' six-run second inning. Pack led off the top of the frame with a home run to right-center. After sophomore Julie Rodriguez reached on a two-base error and senior Brianna Tautalafuaย walked, Shaw singled up the middle to plate Rodriguez to make it 2-0. With freshman Kelly Flynn running for Tautalafuaย at second, sophomore Kinsley Washington drove her home on a double to extend the lead to 3-0. A single to left off the bat of Perez brought in Shaw with the Bruins' fourth run, while a wild pitch scored Washington to make it 5-0. UCLA's sixth run came on an RBI single by Garcia, which scored Perez.
In the third, with Washington at second after reaching on a fielder's choice and Perez at first following a single, Nickles singled up the middle to drive home Washington to make it 7-0.
In the top of the sixth, Nickles led off with a single and was pinch-run for by Godin, who stole second, moved to third on a Garcia fly out and scored on a Pack single to center to bring the lead to 8-0.
Fresno State would extend the game with a two-out, two-run homer by Rachel Minogue in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bruins would hold on for the six-run win.
UCLA continues play at the Hawaii Paradise Classic on Friday against the host Rainbow Wahine at 7 p.m. PT/9 p.m. HT. Free live audio and live stats will be available on UCLABruins.com.
