MVB Stops Cougars in Four Sets

The No. 4 UCLA men's volleyball team defeated No. 7 BYU in four sets in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match held on Saturday night in the John Wooden Center. Scores of the contest were 16-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-18. UCLA is now 10-2 on the season and 2-0 in MPSF action. The Bruins used a season-high 13 aces and a season-best 13 kills from Austin Matautia to hand the Cougars their fourth straight loss. UCLA returns to action on Wednesday with a non-league match at No. 6 UC Santa Barbara.
In set one, BYU took an early 1-4 lead and worked the margin up to 9-14. The Cougars kept the momentum and went up 10-20 before winning the set 16-25. UCLA, which did not register an ace from line, hit .000 for the frame with seven errors. BYU added four blocks to its four aces.
Micah Ma'a and Matautia jump started the Bruins in set two. Ma'a tallied a kill and three straight aces to help lift the Bruins into a 9-3 advantage. A Matautia kill, one of four in the frame, handed UCLA an 11-4 edge. Matt Younggren and Sam Kobrine teamed up on block for a 15-10 lead. A Sam Kobrine ace made it 19-10 and the Bruins closed out the set at 25-14. UCLA hit .391, with five aces. BYU swung at just a .059 clip.
With set three tied at 5-all, UCLA recorded the next four points capped off by an ace from Daenan Gyimah to enjoy a 9-5 lead. The Bruins led 17-11 after a Kobrine kill. A block by Ma'a and Gyimah put the Bruins at set point and UCLA took home the set on a swing Gyimah at 25-19. UCLA hit .500 for the set with just one error on 24 swings and added four more aces. Adam Parks had four kills to pace the attack.

However, the next three points belonged to the Bruins after a series of BYU errors for a 14-9 advantage. The Cougars battled back behind a strong block to slice the lead to two at 19-17. Sam Kobrine fired off a couple of aces to push the margin to 22-17. A Ma'a kill made it 24-18 and Younggren wrapped up the match with the Bruins' 13th ace of the match for a 25-18 win.

Younggren matched his career-best with six block assists, giving him 12 in the last two outings. UCLA hit .229 for the night to .118 for BYU.
