MVB Takes Down Antelopes in Four

The No. 6 UCLA men's volleyball team registered a four-set victory at Grand Canyon University in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played on Friday night in Phoenix. Scores of the contest were 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23. The Bruins, now 14-4 overall and 6-0 in MPSF play, featured a balanced attack with Brandon Rattray (15), Daenan Gyimah (14), Austin Matautia (12) and Sam Kobrine (11) each recording double-digit kills.
In set one, UCLA opened up a 6-3 lead on a block by Rattray / Gyimah. The Bruins owned a 11-8 advantage after a Rattray kill. Grand Canyon caught the Bruins at 13-each. Back-to-back kills by Sam Kobrine put UCLA up 18-16. Grant Maleski fired an ace for a 21-17 lead. Kills by Gyimah, Matautia and Rattray provided the final three points in a 25-20 win. UCLA hit .357 for the set.
In set two, Grand Canyon spurted to a 1-6 advantage. UCLA closed to 7-12 after a Gyimah kill. A Gyimah kill, followed by a GCU error, pulled UCLA to within 18-20. However, it was as close as the Bruins would come in a 21-25 setback. UCLA totaled nine service errors for the frame and GCU hit .333.
GCU began set three on a roll and went out to a 4-8 lead. UCLA fought back to even the score at 11-all on a kill by Kobrine. Maleski and Matautia combined on a block for a 15-12 advantage. The Bruins led 19-14 following another Kobrine kill. GCU closed to one at 21-20 and 23-22. Gyimah answered with a kill for a 24-22 edge. A service error made it 24-23 and Maleski finished off the set with a kill for a 25-23 win.
The Antelopes grabbed the momentum and a 4-8 lead to begin set four. UCLA bounced back to pull even at 9-all on a Rattray/Gyimah block. The score was then tied at points 10 to 12. GCU tallied the next two points to gain an working edge and then extended the margin to a 15-18. UCLA answered with three straight on kills by Sam Kobrine, an error and another Gyimah/Rattray block. Two kills by Matautia and one from Kobrine tied the score at points 21, 22 and 23. After a GCU error, Kobrine / Gyimah combined for a block to end the match and deliver a 25-23 win.
The Bruins outhit GCU .248 to .170 in the contest. It was the fifth time this season the Bruins have limited an opponent to .200 or less in a match. Micah Ma'a led UCLA with 10 digs, but failed to record an ace for just the second match this season. Each team had one ace overall for the match, a season-low for the Bruins, who survived 26 service errors. GCU won the battle at the nets 12.0 to 7.0.
UCLA will play next on Friday evening at 5 p.m. in the Galen Center against Ohio State in the first-day contest of the Pac-12 / Big Ten Challenge hosted by USC. The Bruins will battle Penn State on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Galen Center.
