COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sixth-seeded UCLA erupted for the most points in NCAA postseason play since the 1991-92 season, and sophomore Michaela Onyenwere led the way with 22 points and 15 rebounds as the Bruins eliminated 11th-seeded Tennessee, 89-77, on Saturday afternoon at the XFINITY Center.
With the game tied at 70 in the fourth quarter, the Bruins used a 10-0 run to pull away, led by eight combined points between Onyenwere and senior Kennedy Burke.
Onyenwere's 15 rebounds matched a career high, and she had six offensive boards. She shot 10-for-22 from the field.
Redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro scored a career-high 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting, going 4-for-6 from 3-point range. She also had four rebounds and four assists.
Burke scored 10 of her 19 points in the second half, while junior Japreece Dean and redshirt senior Lajahna Drummer added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
As a team, UCLA (21-12) shot 42.5 percent (31-for-73) from the floor and won the rebounding battle, 43-40.
The Storyline
UCLA started the game hot, connecting on its first four field goals to race to a 12-4 lead. The Bruins continued to hammer down Tennessee, stretching their advantage to as many as 17 in the first quarter, getting four assists from Dean, five boards from Onyenwere and seven points from Corsaro.
After Tennessee (19-13) pulled to within nine (30-21), Corsaro scored on a drive to the hoop, and then Dean tallied a two on the run to stretch it back to 13. UCLA outscored Tennessee in the paint, 22-14, in the opening 20 minutes and had four players with eight points or more, propelling the Bruins to a 44-32 halftime edge.
A Bruin scoring drought of over three minutes and an 11-0 Lady Vols run helped Tennessee pull to within five (48-43) midway through the third stanza. Corsaro responded with a trey on the other end, but Tennessee used two quick baskets to slice its deficit to four (51-47) and later tied the affair at 52 apiece.
In the final seconds of the frame, Dean hit a clutch 3-point runner to grant the Bruins a four-point (58-54) lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Vols took their first lead of the game with a layup at the 8:49 mark, and the two teams exchanged leads five times before meeting at a 70-all standstill.
Onyenwere notched a put-back late to make it 72-70 UCLA, and then Burke scored on the break to make it a four-point game and spark a strong finish by the Bruins.
