March 24, 2019 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. โ The No. 9 UCLA women's tennis team improved to 3-0 in Pac-12 play Sunday afternoon, defeating Oregon 6-1 at the Oregon Student Tennis Center. The Bruins clinched the match at 4-0 before the remaining matches were played to completion.
It was a big day for the Bruins' Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart. The pair clinched the doubles point and each also notched a singles win. Bolton clinched the overall victory. Abi Altick and Taylor Johnson also tallied singles wins for UCLA (10-3, 3-0) in played contests. Forced to forfeit a pair of matches, Oregon (6-11, 0-6) got its lone win from Julia Eshet after Alaina Miller retired.
The Bruins picked up the day's first win without playing a point, as Oregon forfeited on Court 3. The duo of Johnson and Ayan Broomfield was the team of record for UCLA. With the Bruins needing to win just one played match in order to clinch, 22nd-ranked Bolton and Hart did the deed with a 6-2 victory over Daniela Nasser and Paiton Wagner on the top court. Altick-Miller led Eshet-Rifanty Kahfiani of the Ducks 4-2 on Court 2 at the time of finish.
Oregon also forfeited on Court 6 in singles play, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead with just one match finished. Sophie Bendetti was the player of record in the forfeited match. The Bruins would go on to tally first-set wins on four of five courts.
Taylor Johnson made quick work of Taryn Fujimori on Court 5, registering a 6-0, 6-0 victory to give UCLA a 3-0 lead. The win marked the first of Johnson's career in Pac-12 competition.
Another freshman followed suit, as No. 18 Bolton topped Wagner 6-2, 6-3 on Court 2 to clinch the overall win. The clinching win represented the third of the Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. native's debut season, tying her with Altick for the team lead. The win also marked Bolton's team-high 18th overall.
The remaining matches were played out, with Altick continuing the run on Bruin wins with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Kahfiani on Court 3 to make it 5-0. Miller dropped her first set against Oregon's Eshet on Court 4 before taking the first three games in the second, but ultimately bowed out.
With UCLA leading 5-1, the final decision was made on the top court. No. 56 Hart doubled up Nasser in the first set before the Duck answered in the second. The third set was decided by a 10-point tiebreaker, where Hart prevailed 11-9.
The Bruins will head home for three matches in the upcoming week. They will host UC Santa Barbara in a non-conference tilt Wednesday at 1 p.m. before returning to Pac-12 play against No. 4 Stanford Friday (1:30 p.m.) and No. 19 California Saturday (12 p.m.).
