Six Bruins Receive Regular Season All-America Honors

March 27, 2019 | Gymnastics

A total of six Bruins combined for a program-record 12 regular season All-America honors in 2019, led by junior Kyla Ross, the only gymnast in the nation to earn first-team honors on all four events and the all-around.

Ross, the 2019 Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year, finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation in the all-around, vault and uneven bars, No. 3 on balance beam and No. 4 on floor exercise. She has scored 11 perfect 10s this season, including at least one on each event to achieve the Gym Slam. Ross becomes just the fourth Bruin in history to earn the maximum five first-team honors in a year, joining Tasha Schwikert (2005), Jamie Dantzscher (2002) and Heidi Moneymaker (1999). The 2012 Olympic gold medalist now has 15 All-America honors in her career, fourth-most in UCLA history.

Also receiving multiple first-team honors was senior Katelyn Ohashi on balance beam and floor exercise, bringing her career All-America total to eight. The 2018 and 2019 Pac-12 Specialist of the Year won both events at last week's Pac-12 Championships. Armed with six perfect 10s on the year, she finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation on floor exercise with a NQS of 10.0, becoming just the fourth gymnast in NCAA history to do so on any event. Ohashi also finished the year ranked No. 2 on balance beam.

Junior Felicia Hano received All-America honors on two events, earning first-team acclaim on vault and second-team honors on floor, a reverse of last season, when she was first-team on floor and second-team on vault. The five-time All-American tied for the Pac-12 vault title with a season-high-tying 9.950 and finished the regular season ranked No. 6 overall with a National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 9.930. On floor, she finished tied for No. 16 with a 9.925 NQS.

UCLA's fourth first-team All-American is junior Madison Kocian, who received first-team honors on uneven bars. Kocian ranks No. 6 in the nation with a 9.945 NQS and is one of five gymnasts in the country to score a perfect 10 on uneven bars this year. The 2016 Olympic gold and silver medalist earned her fifth career All-America honor.

Earning second-team honors are freshman Norah Flatley on uneven bars and junior Gracie Kramer on floor exercise. Flatley ranks No. 14 nationally on bars with a 9.920 NQS. She has a high of 9.975 this season with five Top 3 finishes. Kramer ranks No. 13 on floor with a NQS of 9.930 and a season average of 9.904. Kramer scored a high of 9.95 twice this season. These are the first All-America honors for each of them.

The regular season All-Americans are awarded by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) to the Top 16-ranked gymnasts on each event and the all-around. First-team All-Americans are the Top 8-ranked gymnasts in the nation, while the second-team All-Americans are the gymnasts ranked No. 9-16.
