No. 6 Women's Tennis Tops Arizona State
March 08, 2019 | Women's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. โ The No. 6 UCLA women's tennis team dropped the doubles point before bouncing back to defeat Arizona State 4-2 in the teams' Pac-12 opener Friday afternoon at Whiteman Tennis Center.
Alaina Miller clinched the win for the Bruins (8-2, 1-0) with a three-set triumph on Court 5. Prior to that, Abi Altick, Jada Hart and Ayan Broomfield recorded singles wins of their own. Lauryn John-Baptiste turned in the lone singles win for the Sun Devils (5-5, 0-1).
The Bruins started strong in doubles play, scoring breaks on Courts 2 and 3. Playing on Court 2 for the first time this season, the 10th-ranked duo of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield kept it up against Tereza Kolarova and Savannah Slaysman. The Bruins cruised to a 6-1 victory in an attempt to set the tone.
Arizona State rebounded in a major way, however, charging back on Courts 1 and 3. The day's marquee matchup between UCLA's 16th-ranked pair of Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart and No. 6 Ilze Hattingh-Lauryn John-Baptiste went true to form. Leading 5-4, Bolton-Hart allowed the Sun Devils to pull even and never recovered. Hattingh and John-Baptiste secured the final three games and the win.
The tide turned on Court 3 when Sun Devils Samantha Alicea and Sammi Hampton secured three straight games to pull even with Abi Altick and Taylor Johnson at 4-4. The match would eventually be decided by a tiebreaker, which Alicea-Hampton took 9-7 with nine of the final 12 games.
Altick did not let the deciding doubles loss faze her, as the sophomore dominated her singles match on Court 4. Ranked No. 110 by Oracle ITA in the latest singles rankings, Altick surrendered just three games against Hampton to exact some revenge and pull the Bruins even at 1-1. The 6-1, 6-2 victory improved the Monroe, La. native's record to 12-6 and 4-1 in dual matches.
With the Bruins in danger of dropping three first sets, Hart came up big in her tiebreaker against Hattingh on the top court. Trailing 2-5, the redshirt junior took her game to a different level, securing the next five points and the set. Then, in a nip-and-tuck second set, Hart again came up big late. The 7-6(5), 6-4 win marked her third in as many tries.
Broomfield also proved resilient after dropping her first set. In fact, the senior blanked Kolarova in the second to set up the deciding frame. There, Broomfield doubled up the Sun Devil for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win and a 3-1 lead.
Arizona State got back into it with a heated battle on Court 2, where John-Baptiste dealt Bolton a loss in her Pac-12 debut. The three-set decision, Bolton's first of the dual-match season, cut the UCLA lead in half.
The Bruins held leads on Courts 5 and 6 when the Sun Devils locked up their second point, but both were hanging in the balance. Johnson claimed a second-set tiebreaker on Court 6, but her match was ultimately left unfinished.
Miller and Slaysman split their first two sets, with both going 12 games. Miller could not build a cushion in the third, either, but ultimately prevailed with a hold at 5-4. Miller's 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 victory improved her dual-match record to 8-1.
The Bruins will be back at it Saturday with a visit to Arizona's Lanelle Robson Tennis Center. First serve between the Bruins and Wildcats will occur at 11 a.m., PT.
