MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.ย -- No. 1 UCLA improved to 12-0 on the year, postingย a pair of 4-1 wins to open play in the East Meets West Challenge at Manhattan Beach Pier on Saturday, defeatingย No. 6 LSU (7-3)ย and No. 9 FIU (5-2).
Seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara put the Bruins up 1-0 on court one over LSU with a straight-set win over Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss, 21-16, 21-19.
The reigning AVCA/CollegeBeachVB.com National Pair of the Week, junior Lily Justine and senior Sarah Sponcil, remained undefeated on the year at 11-0, puttingย the Bruins up 2-0 ย with a straight-set win over LSU's Olivia Powers and Ashlynย Rasnick-Popeย on court two, 21-18, 21-15.
Sophomore Megan Muretย returned to the lineup with her old partner, senior Izzy Carey, and the Bruin duo clinched the dual with a straight-set win over the Tigers' Allison Coens and Hunter Domanski, 21-18, 22-20.
Theย relatively new pairing of sophomore Lea Monkhouseย and junior Savvy Simoย stepped up to court three, but fell to Toni Rodriguez and Kelli Agnew in two tight sets, 21-18, 21-18.
UCLA freshmen Lindsey Sparks andย Abby Van Winkle teamed for a court four win over LSU's Tarynย Kloth and Maddieย Ligon, 21-18, 21-17 to provide the 4-1 final.

In the win over FIU, the McNamarasย got the Bruins on the board first again with a straight-set win over Allison Denney and Abbieย Hughes, 21-13, 21-16.
Thenย Monkhouseย andย Simoย dropped back to court four and posted a straight-set win over the Panthers' Lina Bernierย and Erika Zembyla, 21-14, 21-17.
Justine andย Sponcilย dropped their first match of the year on court two to FIU's Federicaย Frasca and Margherita Bianchin, 21-18, 21-17.
Freshman Lindsey Sparks and seniorย Izzy Carey then clinched the dual on court five with a three-set thriller over FIU's Katie Friesen and Madison Besterfield, 21-15, 19-21, 15-13.
UCLA freshman Abby Van Winkle and senior Zana Munoย remained undefeated at 10-0 with another three-set win on court three over the Panthers' Donna Klinger and Ronjaย Klinger, 23-21, 18-21, 15-11ย to provide the 4-1 final.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow in the final day of theย East Meets West Challenge at Manhattan Beach Pier facingย No. 4 FSU at Noon and No. 19 TCU at 4:00 p.m. PT.
