Women's Tennis Comes Up Short at Washington State

April 12, 2019 | Women's Tennis

PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 10 UCLA women's tennis team was unable to complete its comeback from a 3-1 deficit on the bottom courts, falling to No. 42 Washington State 4-2 Friday at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

The Cougars' home facility houses four courts, delaying the beginning of the Courts 5 and 6 matches. Aneta Mikovska clinched the victory in three sets, topping Gabby Andrews on Court 5. The Bruins got off on the right foot by claiming the doubles point, but were able to claim just one singles win—by Ayan Broomfield—the rest of the way. Washington State improves to 18-7 (3-5 in Pac-12 matches) with the win, while UCLA drops to 14-6 (6-2).

Locked in a tight one against Mikovska and Michaela Bayerlova of Washington State, No. 46 Abi Altick-Alaina Miller found an opening and took it for the first decision of the day. The Bruin duo won 6-4 for its third straight and fourth in five tries. Soon thereafter, however, the Cougar combination of Tiffany Mylonas and Hikaru Sato upset fifth-ranked Broomfield-Gabby Andrews with a 6-3 result to put all eyes on Court 2.

There, 12th-ranked Elysia Bolton-Jada Hart went to a tiebreaker against Melisa Ates and Yang Lee. The Bruins would prove too strong, though, notching a 7-5 showing with the pressure on. The win marked the first in a tiebreaker for the pair, which has won seven decisions in a row.

Courts 1-4 entered singles play first and the Cougars immediately took three first sets. Lee got a challenge from UCLA's Miller on Court 4 in the second set, but tied the overall tally at 2-2 with a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

No. 38 Hart picked up a first-set win on the top court, but No. 52 Bayerlova responded by taking the final two frames. The 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision represented Hart's first loss to a ranked player in her last four opportunities.

The Court 3 match was a near mirror image of Court 2, as No. 122 Altick decisively beat Mylonas in the first set before having momentum swung 180 degrees. The Cougar completed her comeback effort in a close third-set tiebreaker. The 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(5) win made it 3-1.

Broomfield flipped the script, dropping her first set against Sato by a 6-2 score before answering with subsequent 6-4 showings in her favor. The Bruin senior was playing in the No. 2 spot for just the third time this season, as Bolton was scratched following doubles play.

Andrews dropped six of seven games in her first set against Mikovska, but once again, the tides would turn. The Cougar senior would double up Andrews in the second set before forcing a tiebreaker in the decider. Mikovska proved too much in the marathon match, recording the 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(2) win to clinch.

The Bruins will be back at it Sunday, when they visit No. 15 Washington. First serve from Seattle is set for 12 p.m.
