Kondos Field Named West Region Coach of the Year
April 18, 2019 | Gymnastics
UCLA's Valorie Kondos Field was announced by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) as the West Region Head Coach of the Year for the second-straight season. Honorees in each region are selected by a vote of the coaches in each Division.
Kondos Field, who was earlier selected the 2019 Pac-12 Coach of the Year, is in her 29th and final season as the Bruin head coach. She has led UCLA to a 19-1 record, No. 2 national ranking and 198.010 NQS, their second-highest NQS/RQS ever. The Bruins have scored 197+ in every meet for the first time ever and have posted a school record-tying five scores of 198+, with a high of 198.400 set during their Pac-12 Championship win. UCLA finished the regular season ranked in the Top 3 on every event - No. 1 on floor and bars, No. 2 on beam and No. 3 on vault and has posted the nation's top marks this season for team total (198.400), beam (49.700) and floor (49.825).
Kondos Field has led UCLA to all seven of its NCAA Championships, along with 15 conference and 20 NCAA Regional championships. The Bruins won both the Pac-12 and NCAA Ann Arbor Regional this season. Kondos Field holds a career record of 535-121-3. She is a member of the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame and was honored as the Pac-12 Gymnastics Coach of the Century.
Her legacy goes far beyond the awards and championships, however. Kondos Field has made a lasting impact on the sport and on her gymnasts through her leadership and by coaching the person before the athlete.
Additionally, UCLA Senior Associate Athletic Director Dr. Christina Rivera was voted the West Region Administrator of the Year for the second consecutive year.
