Women's Tennis Bested by Stanford in Pac-12 Final
April 27, 2019 | Women's Tennis
OJAI, Calif. โ The second-seeded UCLA women's tennis team fell to No. 1 seed Stanford 4-2 Saturday in the Pac-12 Championships final round at Libbey Park.
The Bruins earned the doubles point for an early lead, but were bested on the singles courts. Emily Arbuthnott clinched the overall win in three sets, with Michaela Gordon, Melissa Lord and Caroline Lampl also triumphant for the Cardinal (22-1). It was a big day for Gabby Andrews, who won her singles match after clinching the doubles point with Ayan Broomfield for UCLA (18-7).
UCLA's doubles pair of Abi Altick and Taylor Johnson continued its success on Court 3, winning its fifth consecutive match and improving to 9-1 overall. In a back-and-forth affair with 51st-ranked Melissa Lord and Niluka Madurawe, the Bruins earned a big break of serve to take a 5-3 lead. Back on serve, Altick and Johnson controlled the final set and watched a Lord shot go long to give them the day's first victory.
No. 4 Andrews and Broomfield jumped out to a 5-2 lead on No. 14 Caroline Lampl-Kimberly Yee before the Cardinal pair pushed back. Lampl-Yee took the next two games and held a 40-15 advantage down 4-5, but Andrews-Broomfield stepped up with the final three points to secure the doubles point. The pair's 20th win of the campaign also marked its seventh in 10 tries against nationally-ranked opponents.
Stanford collected first sets across the first four courts to move halfway to the title. Lampl got the Cardinal on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Friday's semifinal hero Broomfield on Court 3.
Andrews put a bow on her fifth straight win, taking down Emma Higuchi by a 6-3, 6-2 score on Court 6. The senior trailed 1-2 in the second set before responding with the final five games. Each of Andrews' wins during her personal streak have come in straight sets.
The top two courts were next to finish, as No. 32 Lord took down No. 29 Bolton 7-5, 6-3 and No. 24 Gordon topped No. 42 Hart 6-4, 6-4 in the day's marquee matchups. With Stanford in possession of the lead for the first time, Courts 4 and 5 headed to third sets.
Alaina Miller rebounded from a 3-5 second-set deficit against No. 46 Emily Arbuthnott to force a deciding third frame. There, the Cardinal junior claimed each of the six games to seal the regular-season champion's third straight tournament title.
The NCAA Selection Show will air Monday at 3:30 p.m., PT via NCAA.com live stream.
