May 10, 2019 | Men's Tennis
WACO, Texas โ The 11th-seeded UCLA men's tennis team suffered a 4-1 loss at No. 6 Baylor Friday, ending its season in the NCAA Championships third round.
The Bruins, who won the Pac-12 regular-season championship, concluded their campaign with a 19-6 overall record. Baylor improved to 25-5 and advanced to the NCAA Championships quarterfinal round in Orlando, Fla.
Senior Maxime Cressy turned in UCLA's lone win in his final dual match as a Bruin. He will participate in the upcoming singles and doubles championships in Orlando. Joining him will be Keegan Smith, who will also participate in both competitions. Cressy-Smith is seeded second in the doubles draw.
UCLA's Court 3 duo of Bryce Pereira and Patrick Zahraj dropped its first three games against Constantin Frantzen and Johannes Schretter, but did not go down easily. Frantzen-Schretter eventually earned a 6-3 victory, dropping Pereira-Zahraj's record to 14-9.
The top-court match between No. 1 Jimmy Bendeck-Sven Lah and No. 2 Cressy-Smith was left unfinished with the Bruins leading 5-4. Govind Nanda-Connor Rapp held a 4-3 advantage against Will Little and Matias Soto on Court 2, but the Bears closed with three consecutive games to secure the day's first point.
Baylor took five first sets to move closer to the overall victory, but the Bruins challenged up and down the second sets. No. 76 Lah recorded a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Ben Goldberg on Court 5 to increase the lead to 2-0. Goldberg completed his junior campaign with a 7-6 mark on Court 5 and held a spot in the singles lineup in the season's final 24 contests.
No. 112 Adrian Boitan made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 result against No. 68 Nanda on Court 3. A Second-Team All-Pac-12 performer, Nanda won a team-high 17 dual matches during his debut season. He faced an 0-3 deficit in the second set against Boitan, but was unable to come all the way back.
Eighteenth-ranked Cressy topped No. 20 Schretter 6-4, 6-1 on the top court, completing his dual-match career with a victory. After playing sparingly on the singles courts his freshman year, Cressy worked his way up the lineup before going 15-3 out of the No. 1 spot as a senior. He will take an eight-match winning streak into the singles tournament in Orlando.
The match would be decided on Court 6, where Bendeck dealt freshman Roscoe Bellamy a three-set loss. Playing in just his third match of the dual-match season, Bellamy answered a 2-6 first set with a 6-3 second. Bendeck closed the action with a 6-2 result in the third and final set of the day.
