TUCSON, Ariz. โ€“ Despite a delay of over three hours due to lightning and inclement weather, the UCLA track & field team shined bright through those dark skies, collecting a pair of individual Pac-12 titles from Simon Litzell and Robert Brandt.ย
ย
Litzell was simply clutch. Trailing Washington's Denham Patricelli, who took the lead on attempt five and then extended it on his sixth throw, Litzell had one last chance to earn his second consecutive Pac-12 javelin championship. With a big heave that sent him to the blue pavement, Litzell reached 74.23m (243-6), two feet ahead of his rival competitor, to notch the comeback. He is just the fifth athlete to repeat in the javelin in conference history since the new implement in 1986.
ย
The clock struck midnight when Brandt won the 10K, as he broke away from the third and fourth spots late to win the race with a time of 29:08.11. He is the first Bruin to win the event since 1982, when Steve Ortiz did it with a time of 28:22.93.
ย
After day one, the UCLA men sit in first place with 58 points, followed by Oregon (51) and Arizona (36). Just four events have been scored for the women thus far, and UCLA is in eighth with six points.

ย

ย
Both Cameron Stone and Joe Herrera qualified for the finals of the 400m dash, getting a time of 47.24, which ranked third, and a PR from Herrera of 46.35, good for fifth.
ย
Harrison Schrage helped UCLA muster five points in the long jump, as he took fourth with a top mark of 7.52m (24-8.25) on his first attempt.

She finished the race in 53.60, making her the final qualifier.
ย
Dominique Beltrez (13.79) placed 12th in the prelims of the 100m hurdles, and Cassandra Durgy (4:33.52), Kelly Bernd (4:34.69) and Lilly Schmidt (4:42.00) went 21-22-26 in the 1500m prelims.
