Men's Tennis Tops Cowboys to Make Second Weekend
May 04, 2019 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The 11th-seeded UCLA men's tennis team advanced into the third round of the NCAA Championships Saturday, beating Oklahoma State 4-0 at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
With the win, the Bruins will stand among the final 16 teams in the tournament in a feat they have accomplished every year since the tournament format was adopted in 1977. The field grew from 16 teams to 64 teams in 1999. They will visit sixth-seeded Baylor in the super-regional round, a new addition this year.
For the second match in a row, Maxime Cressy clinched the overall win on the top court. Govind Nanda and Keegan Smith also notched wins for UCLA (19-5), making it a clean sweep of the stadium courts. All three doubles matches were needed to determine the afternoon's opening point, but Oklahoma State (16-12) could not overcome Cressy and Smith in the decider.
Doubles play was closely contested, with UCLA holding simultaneous 3-2 leads across the three courts at one point. The 41st-ranked pair of Emile Hudd and Matej Vocel gave Oklahoma State the day's first win on Court 2, where the pair captured the final four games for a 6-3 defeat of Govind Nanda and Connor Rapp.
The Bruins pulled even on Court 3, where Bryce Pereira and Patrick Zahraj posted a 6-4 win against Artur Dubinski and Luke Hammond. A flurry of breaks of serve was capped by a Pereira return at the net that gave the UCLA tandem its sixth win in its last eight decisions.
All eyes moved to the feature contest between No. 2 Cressy-Smith and No. 36 Mathieu Scaglia-Maxim Tybar, which ultimately went the way of the Bruins. A Smith serve was too hot to handle for the Cowboy returner, giving the pair a hold and UCLA the day's first point. The win improved Cressy-Smith's record to 16-0.
Five of six first sets went the way of the Bruins. Zahraj and Ben Goldberg neared victories of their own on the lower courts, but the match would be closed out up top.
No. 68 Nanda, who took just his second loss since mid-February at Pac-Championships, bounced back against Scaglia on Court 3. The Redlands, Calif. native used a hard overhead shot at the net to complete a 6-1, 6-4 victory for the 20th of his debut campaign.
No. 36 Smith got off to a slow start on Court 2, but closed strong against Dubinski. The Cowboy jumped out to a 3-1 first-set lead before Smith charged back with the next five games and a first-set win. The UCLA sophomore kept it going through the second set for a 6-3, 6-2 win, his 12th in a row.

After a first set that saw him take six of seven games, No. 18 Cressy went up 4-1 in the second. No. 34 Vocel collected two of the next three, but his final shot went wide to put an end to match. One day after clinching with a 6-1, 6-4 performance, Cressy did so again by way of a 6-1, 6-3 score.
