Bruin Men Tally Eight Points on Day One of NCAA Championships

June 05, 2019 | Track & Field

AUSTIN – UCLA's shot putters made a statement on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, accounting for six of the eight points for the Bruin men on Wednesday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Senior Dotun Ogundeji finished his collegiate shot put career in style, placing fifth with a throw of 19.73m (64-8.75). He earned First Team All-America honors, as did Nate Esparza, who finished seventh at 19.65m (64-5.75). In his NCAA Championships debut, Otito Ogbonnia wrapped up the top 10 in the event, posting a throw of 19.44m (63-9.5) to reap Second Team All-America plaudits.

UCLA got two more points to cap the evening thanks to a seventh-place finish from Robert Brandt in the 10K, who crossed the line at the 29:26.34 mark. Brandt, who led the race momentarily down the stretch, is now a two-time outdoor First Team All-American in the 10K.

In the men's hammer, Justin Stafford capped the first flight with a best mark of 67.05m (219-11), which put him in sixth place. He ultimately finished his career with a 15th-place finish to garner Second Team All-America honors.

Sondre Guttormsen capped his freshman campaign with a ninth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 5.50m (18-0.5) and later 5.60m (18-4.5) en route to becoming a Second Team All-American. His outdoor-collegiate-best mark moved him into a tie for fourth all-time in UCLA's outdoor record book.

In the men's javelin, Simon Litzell heaved 63.41m (208-0) to place 22nd.

The quartet of Leon Powell, Harrison Schrage, Kenroy Higgins II and Seth Holloway finished the prelims of the 4x100m in 40.18, placing the Bruins at 20th.

The Bruins also competed in the men's 4x400m prelims, getting a 22nd-place finish (3:10.70) from Powell, Cameron Stone, Damion Marshall and Joe Herrera.

UCLA returns to action tomorrow with the women's hammer at 4:30 p.m. (CT).
