Bruins Help USA Softball Win Gold at Pan American Games

LIMA, Peru -ย Rising senior Rachel Garcia and Bruin alum Delaney Spaulding helped USA Softball win gold at the 2019 Pan American Games, clinching the championship with a 3-1 victory over Canada on Saturday. The duo was a part of the squad which also featured Bruin alums Ally Carda (alternate) and Tairia Flowers (assistant coach).
Garcia appeared as a batter in five of eight games and a pitcher in three contests. She did not allow a run in 8 1/3 innings, picking up a victory against Venezuela (Aug. 7), striking out 10 and allowing just four hits and one walk in the three games. Garcia threw 4 2/3 innings in the win versus Venezuela, striking out five. At the plate, she was 4-for-12 (.333) with three runs batted in on an RBI single against Puerto Rico (Aug. 5) and a two-run double versus Peru (Aug. 8).
Spaulding played in all eight games and hit .364 (8-for-22) with 11 runs batted in, three home runs and five runs scored. She hit homers in three of the first four games of the tournament. Spaulding belted two-run homers against Puerto Rico and Canada (Aug. 6) and a grand slam versus Venezuela. She also drove in three in the opener against Mexico (Aug. 4).
Ahead of the United States Women's Olympic Team Selection Trials at the beginning of October, the U.S. Women's National Team has one more event this summer, taking part in the Japan Cup (Aug. 30-Sept. 1) in Takasaki City, Japan.
