UCLA Wins Season Opener, 3-0, Over Iowa State

The No. 4 UCLA women's soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout victory over Iowa State in the 2019 season opener. Junior Ashley Sanchez recorded a goal and assist, and a pair of freshmen - Rachel Lowe and Mia Fishel - netted their first collegiate goals.
Sanchez, who ended the 2018 campaign having scored a goal or assist in 13 straight games, made it 14 with her goal in the 33rd minute. After receiving a pass from Jessie Fleming, Sanchez fired from long distance. Cyclone goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg got a hand on it but was unable to control the hard shot, and it fell into the back of the net for the Bruins' first goal of the season.
The freshmen had their turn to shine in the second half of the contest. Lowe worked quickly to record her first goal after entering at the start of the second half. In the 58th minute, Sanchez worked in a perfect cross from the left side right to Lowe's feet at the front of the box. Drifting to her left, Lowe tapped her shot right to the opposite corner, out of Schwichtenberg's reach for the 2-0 lead.

In the final minute of the game, Fishel put UCLA ahead 3-0, knocking in a Marley Canales corner kick from about 12 yards out with 12 seconds remaining.
Senior goalkeeper Teagan Micah earned the shutout win and made history by becoming the first UCLA goalkeeper ever to start in four season opening games. Micah had just one save in the game, but it was a milestone one - her 200th career save.

The Bruins (1-0) will next play at Long Beach State on Sunday at 6pm at George Allen Field.
