UCLA Shuts Out Long Beach State, 1-0

LONG BEACH, CALIF. – No. 4 UCLA extended its unbeaten streak to 15 games after a 1-0 win at Long Beach State. Freshman Mia Fishel's first-half goal stood for the Bruins, who improved their record to 2-0.
Fishel scored the game's only goal in the 13th minute off a free kick from Ashley Sanchez, who looped a ball into the right side of the box. Fishel one-timed it past the Long Beach State goalkeeper to the far post for her second goal in as many games. The assist extended Sanchez's point-scoring streak to 15 games.
Long Beach State pushed for the equalizer in the second half, but some outstanding defense helped keep the Beach off the board. In the 66th minute, Marley Canales cleared a shot off the line after a corner kick, and in the 78th minute, Karina Rodriguez blocked a shot by Elysia Laramie on a breakaway opportunity.
Senior goalkeeper Teagan Micah earned the shutout, her second of the year. She had one save on 10 Long Beach State shots. Marta Alemany Sanchez made seven saves for the Beach on 21 Bruin shots.
UCLA will next face No. 1 Florida State on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 5:30pm at Banc of California Stadium. Tickets for Battle at the Banc are on sale at Ticketmaster.
