BATTLE AT THE BANC - CALIFORNIA VS. FLORIDA
It will be Southern California vs. Florida all weekend, as No. 4 UCLA and No. 5 USC challenge No. 1 Florida State and Florida in a pair of games in Los Angeles. On Thursday, Aug. 29. the four teams will gather at Banc of California Stadium, home of LAFC, as UCLA takes on Florida State at 5:30pm and USC hosts Florida at 8pm. On Sunday, Sept. 1, the games move to UCLA's Wallis Annenberg Stadium for USC vs. Florida State at 2pm and UCLA vs. Florida at 5pm. All four games will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
CLEAR BAG POLICY - BANC OF CALIFORNIA STADIUM
Banc of California Stadium has a Clear Bag Policy in order to provide a safer environment for fans and will consequently also expedite entry into the Stadium. The policy affects the type and size of the bags permitted into the Stadium, not the items (keys, makeup, combs, phones, wallets, etc). Guests will also be allowed to openly carry a blanket or jacket into the Stadium, although they will be subject to being searched. It is required that fans bring bags that meet the following style and size limits that are permissible at Banc of California Stadium:
- One bag that is clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and does not exceed 12" x 6" x 12", or:- A one-gallon clear plastic storage bag (Ziploc bag or similar).- In addition to one of the clear bags noted above, guests may also carry in a small clutch bag or purse approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap.- Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection and Stadium Management approval.
CHAMPIONS CLUB
All four teams competing this weekend are members of the NCAA Champions club, with four of the last six NCAA championship teams featured. UCLA won its title in 2013, defeating Florida State, 1-0 in overtime. Florida State is the defending champion and also won in 2014. USC won its titles in 2016 and 2007, and Florida won in 1998.
FIVE WORLD CUP PLAYERS TAKE STAGE
Southern California will have a chance to see five 2019 World Cup players in action this weekend. UCLA has two World Cup players in Canadian starter Jessie Fleming and Australian Teagan Micah. Fleming will be reunited with her Canadian teammates Gabrielle Carle from Florida State and Deanne Rose from Florida. USC freshman Olufolasade Adamolekun represented Jamaica.
SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES
Florida State is the reigning national champion and enters the week ranked No. 1 with a 2-0 record after shutout wins over over TCU (2-0) and Wisconsin (1-0 in OT). Deyna Castellanos leads the squad in scoring with one goal and one assist, both recorded in the TCU match. Goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers recorded two shutouts and has totaled five saves so far this season. Florida State has four players on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List - senior Deyna Castellanos, redshirt junior Malia Berkely, sophomore Jaelin Howell and sophomore Yujie Zhao. UCLA leads the overall series with Florida State, 2-1 but lost the last meeting, 4-1, in Tallahassee a year ago with both Jessie Fleming and Hailie Mace out of the lineup due to national team commitments. UCLA's last victory against the Seminoles was a big one - a 1-0 overtime win in 2013 for the national championship.
SCOUTING THE GATORS
Florida went 2-0 on the road over the weekend, posting a 3-2 win at FAU in the opener and shutting out South Florida, 2-0. Deanne Rose scored three goals with one assist in the two games, including the golden goal at FAU, and was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week and Top Drawer Soccer's National Player of the Week. Goalkeeper Susi Espinoza made eight saves in the shutout win over South Florida. UCLA leads the all-time series with Florida, 4-3-1. The two teams tied 0-0 last year in Gainesville, and Florida beat UCLA in overtime, 4-3, in Los Angeles in 2016. That game was Jessie Fleming's collegiate debut, and she made a big impression, scoring two second half goals. UCLA's last win in the series came in 2011, a 2-0 win in Tennessee.
BRUINS WIN TWO ON OPENING WEEKEND
UCLA earned a pair of shutouts on opening weekend, downing Iowa State 3-0 in the home opener Aug. 23 and then winning at Long Beach State 1-0 on Aug. 25. Ashley Sanchez had a hand in three of the four goals, scoring one and assisting on another in the win over Iowa State and assisting on the game-winner at Long Beach State. The other three goals scored by the Bruins were recorded by freshmen - one in each game by Mia Fishel and one against Iowa State by Rachel Lowe. Senior goalkeeper Teagan Micah picked up the shutout in each game.
MICAH MAKES HISTORY, WINS PAC-12 AWARD
Senior Teagan Micah had a historic weekend, becoming the first goalkeeper in UCLA history to earn the start on opening day in each of her four years. Micah also nabbed her 200th career save in the shutout win over Iowa State. Two days later, she recorded her second shutout of the season in a 1-0 win at Long Beach State. Micah, who ranks No. 4 on UCLA's career charts for saves (201), shutouts (28) and wins (48), earned her seventh career Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week award.
SANCHEZ STREAK CONTINUES
Junior forward Ashley Sanchez has extended her school record point scoring streak to 15 games after her one goal, one assist performance against Iowa State and her assist at Long Beach State. During this streak, which began on Sept. 30, 2018, she has totaled nine goals and 15 assists (34 points). With just over two seasons under her belt, Sanchez already ranks sixth on UCLA's career list with 29 assists.
FRESHMEN IMPRESS
UCLA freshmen have accounted for 75% of the team's goal-scoring so far this season, as Mia Fishel has two goals and Rachel Lowe one. Fishel, who leads the team in goals (two), shots (11) and shots on goal (seven), is one of two freshmen starters up top, along with Kali Trevithick, who has five shots in two games. Trevithick was a standout in the two exhibition games, recording two goals and two assists.
UCLA DEBUTS
Six Bruins made their official UCLA debuts last weekend - junior transfer Lucy Parker, redshirt freshman Shana Flynn, and freshmen Mia Fishel, Kali Trevithick, Rachel Lowe and Brianne Riley. Parker, Fishel and Trevithick started both games. Lowe and Riley played in each game, and Flynn saw her first action against Iowa State.
IN THE RANKINGS
There were no changes in the Top 5 after week one. UCLA stands at No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and is second in Top Drawer Soccer's poll. Florida State is the unanimous No. 1, while USC is No. 5 in the coaches poll and No. 7 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll. Florida is receiving votes in the coaches poll.
THREE ON MAC HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST
Three members of the Bruin team have been selected to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for 2019, including 2017 finalist Jessie Fleming, 2018 semifinalist Ashley Sanchez and LSU transfer and 2018 third-team All-American Lucy Parker. The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
BRUINS EARN PRESEASON HONORS
A national-best seven Bruins were selected by Top Drawer Soccer on its preseason Top 100 upperclassman list. Senior midfielder Jessie Fleming tops the list, followed by junior forward Ashley Sanchez, who ranks third. Fleming and Sanchez each made the TDS Preseason Best XI first-team, while junior defender Karina Rodriguez, who ranks as the No. 29 player, made the third team. UCLA's entire backline made the Top 100 list - No. 29 Rodriguez, No. 54 Lucy Parker, No. 61 Kaiya McCullough and No. 78 Delanie Sheehan. Also receiving recognition in the Top 100 was No. 36 Viviana Villacorta.
WORLD CUP BRUINS
Seniors Jessie Fleming and Teagan Micah were two of six Bruins who played in the 2019 Women's World Cup in France this summer. Fleming started all four of Canada's games, logging 360 minutes, the most of any collegiate player. She scored her first World Cup goal in a 2-0 win over New Zealand and was named the FIFA Player of the Match. Micah was a reserve goalkeeper for the Australian team, which fell in penalties in the Round of 16. Other Bruins playing in the World Cup were Americans Abby Dahlkemper, Sam Mewis and Mal Pugh, and New Zealand's Rosie White.
BRUINS VS. THE WORLD
While Jessie Fleming and Teagan Micah were representing their respective countries at the World Cup, 20 of their Bruin teammates were representing the U.S. at the World University Games in Italy. The U.S. finished the tournament with a 2-2 record, dropping close 2-1 decisions against Italy and Japan to start but closing strong with a 4-0 win over South Africa and a 3-1 victory over Mexico. The Bruins had three goals from Ashley Sanchez and two each from Mia Fishel and Olivia Athens. Lauren Brzykcy recorded 10 saves vs. Japan and had a shutout against South Africa.
UCLA 100
UCLA will celebrate its first 100 years with a year-long university-wide Centennial Celebration. UCLA Athletics has several Centennial Celebration plans and giveaways in store for designated home events, including a set of 13 Centennial Pins highlighting each sport, as well as a souvenir mosaic poster that features personal photos submitted by UCLA fans. UCLA women's soccer's Centennial game will take place on Sept. 27.
