No. 4 UCLA Downs No. 1 Florida State, 2-1
August 29, 2019 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – Jessie Fleming scored two first-half goals to lead No. 4 UCLA to a 2-0 win over No. 1 Florida State at Banc of California Stadium. The Bruins extend their unbeaten streak to 16 games.
Fleming, the two-time Canadian World Cup team member, scored in the 14th and 35th minutes. On the first goal, Karina Rodriguez made a great run and pass down the left side to Mia Fishel, who one-timed a pass to Fleming in the box. Fleming calmly finished for her first goal of the 2019 campaign.
Just over 20 minutes later, Fleming struck again, taking a shot from outside the box that went through the Florida State goalkeeper's hands and into the back of the net. Viviana Villacorta and Ashley Sanchez recorded the assists, Sanchez's assist extending her school-record point-scoring streak to 16 games.
Florida State (2-1) picked up the pace in the second half, nearly scoring in the 58th minute on a shot by Jenna Nighswonger that was batted away with a diving save by Teagan Micah. The Seminoles got on the board in the 76th minute on a goal by Jaelin Howell, who found the upper left corner to get a shot past Micah.
The Bruins (3-0) almost increased the lead in the 83rd minute when Sanchez crossed to Fleming at the right post on a breakaway, but Fleming's World Cup teammate Gabby Carle cleared it out of danger. UCLA held on in the final minutes for the victory.
Micah finished the game with two saves, while Florida State's goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers had nine saves.
