MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. – The UCLA cross country program used a total-team effort to breeze past UC Riverside in its season opener at the Shady Rest Campground on Saturday morning.
Running at over 7,800 feet, the Bruins had to battle through tough conditions. UCLA assistant coach Devin Elizondo said the key to today's race was to "stay under control" due to the high elevation.
"If you get out over your skis at 7,800 feet, oxygen debt is exponential."
But the Bruins stuck together.
The UCLA women secured the first six spots to earn the team victory, while the men dominated in collective fashion by capturing the top 10 times in the race.
The women ran three loops at the campground, stepping on the gas pedal on the second loop to pave the way to a convincing victory over the Highlanders.
Emma Tavella, a freshman out of Danville, Calif., came out on top in her first collegiate race, finishing the 4K course at the 15:05.63 mark. She paved the way for five other Bruins, as Lilly Schmidt (15:17.48), Paige Carter (15:22.09), Sophie Scott (15:33.53), Gwyneth George (15:41.84) and Lexi Wright (15:43.70) took the next five slots.
Colin Burke led a group of five Bruins who finished within just under two seconds of one another. Burke, a redshirt senior out of Pleasanton, Calif., crossed the finish line at 16:16.06. He was followed closely by Garrett Reynolds (16:16.31), Millen Trujillo (16:16.56), Arturo Sotomayor (16:16.81) and Carter Blunt (16:17.81).
"The men did a great job of staying poised and being in control," said Elizondo. "The goal was to stay poised and finish together."
NEXT MEET
The Bruins will race in two meets on Sept. 28 – The Master's University XC Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif., and Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Ore.
