UCLA XC Set to Battle Multiple Ranked Foes on Saturday

LOS ANGELES โ€“ After training for over three weeks in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., the UCLA cross country program has returned to Westwood and will split its squad for a pair of meets on Saturday โ€“ the Bill Dellinger Invitational and The Master's University XC Invitational.

BRUINS IN THE POLLS
Week two of the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Cross Country rankings arrived on Tuesday, and the UCLA men remained in the top-25 at No. 24, receiving 82 points. On the women's side, the Bruins accumulated 41 points to rank 27th.

In the regional polls, the men are sitting at fifth for the third week in a row. The Stanford men leapfrogged Oregon for the No. 3 spot after fishing second at the John McNichols Invitational, while Washington and Portland hold the top two spots, respectively.

The Bruin women rank sixth in the West Region. Stanford climbed to the top spot in the West, followed by Washington, Oregon, Boise State and Oregon State.

LAST MEET
UCLA dominated against UC Riverside in its season opener on Aug. 31 in Mammoth Lakes. The UCLA women secured the first six spots to earn the team victory in the 4K, led by Emma Tavella's first-place (15:05.63) finish in her inaugural collegiate race. The Bruin men also controlled the race, capturing the top 10 times, led by Colin Burke's first-place, 5K time of 16:16.06.

MEET NOTABLES
  • There are six men's teams ranked in the top-30 that are scheduled to compete in Springfield, Ore. They include No. 24 UCLA, No. 2 BYU, No. 7 Portland, No. 11 Oregon, No. 27 Air Force and No. 29 Villanova.
  • Along with No. 27 UCLA, the women's race at the Bill Dellinger Invitational will feature five top-30 teams, including No. 6 BYU, No. 9 Oregon, No. 13 Boise State and No. 15 Furman.
  • The Bill Dellinger XC Invitational is named for legendary University of Oregon men's track and field coach Bill Dellinger. The Springfield, Ore., native and two-time NCAA champion for the Ducks was a three-time Olympian, the 1964 Olympic bronze medalist at 5,000 meters, and holder of two world indoor and six American records. As the Oregon men's cross country head coach from 1968-1998, Dellinger guided the Ducks to four NCAA team titles and 12 top-three NCAA finishes.
  • The course for the Master's University XC Invite will be 85 percent dirt paths, 15 percent grass, 60 percent rolling terrain and 40 percent flat. There is also one small hill that will be run three times for the men's 8K, and twice for the women's 5K.

UCLA will compete in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational (Madison, Wis.) on Friday, Oct. 18, followed by the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational (Sunnyvale, Calif.) on Saturday, Oct. 19.
