UCLA Stopped by No. 5 Oklahoma, 48-14

September 14, 2019 | Football

LOS ANGELES — No. 5 Oklahoma jumped on UCLA early and never looked back on the way to a 48-14 win at the Rose Bowl Saturday.

Oklahoma (3-0) led 34-7 at halftime, and while the Bruins (0-3) held the Sooners to 14 points in the second half, they were unable to close the gap.

UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 15-of-26 passes for 201 yards and both of the Bruins' touchdowns. Demetric Felton led the way on the ground for UCLA with 65 yards, including a career-long 42-yard run in the second half.

Jaylen Erwin and Kyle Philips each caught their first touchdown passes in a UCLA uniform, while Devin Asiasi recorded a career-high 71 receiving yards on three long catches.

Quentin Lake led the defense with seven tackles, and Elijah Gates had five tackles and two pass breakups.

Oklahoma racked up 611 yards of total offense largely thanks to the efforts of quarterback Jalen Hurts, who continued his impressive start to the season with 289 yards and three touchdowns in the air and 150 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

The Sooners came out of the gate strong, scoring on their first three possessions to take a 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Hurts carried the Oklahoma offense in the quarter, accounting for 91 yards and a touchdown passing and 103 yards and a touchdown rushing.

The Bruin began to find their footing as the half wore on. Asiasi caught a 23-yard pass from Thompson-Robinson to take UCLA across midfield, and Demetric Felton followed with a 19-yard scamper down the left sideline to take the Bruins into the red zone. A few plays later, Thompson-Robinson connected with Philips for a 13-yard touchdown to cut the Oklahoma lead to 17-7.

But the Sooner offense continued to fire on all cylinders. Calum Sutherland kicked a 32-yard field goal to expand the lead to 20-7, and Hurts followed with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Charleston Rambo to make the score 27-7. Shortly before halftime, Oklahoma capitalized on good field position to add on another score, this time a one-yard rush by CeeDee Lamb, to put the Sooners in front 34-7 heading in to the break.

The Bruins got the ball to start the second half and put together a 14-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Thompson-Robinson completed passes of 28 and 20 yards to Asiasi to move UCLA down the field, and Joshua Kelley powered for five yards on fourth-and-one deep in Sooner territory to keep the drive alive. On third down from the Oklahoma eight-yard line, Thompson-Robinson got the ball to Erwin who dove inside the pylon for UCLA's second score of the day.

The Bruins forced a three-and-out on the next possession and looked to have forced another on the following Oklahoma drive, but an offside penalty gave the Sooners a second chance to convert on third down. Oklahoma took advantage, and a few plays later, Hurts found Rambo deep down the middle for a 39-yard touchdown to push the OU lead to 41-14.

Oklahoma's Rhamondre Stevenson added a one-yard touchdown run with 6:15 to go in the game to make the final score 48-14.

UCLA will return to action next Saturday, September 21, when it travels to take on No. 20 Washington State.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PDT in Pullman, Wash., and the game will be televised on ESPN.
