UCLA OPENS PAC-12 PLAY IN PACIFIC NORTHWEST
After going 3-2-0 in five non-conference games to open the 2019 season, No. 19 UCLA begins Pac-12 action this week with road games at Oregon State and No. 12 Washington. The Bruins are looking to improve on their 5-5-0 mark in league play from a year ago. Both of this weeke's contests will be televised on Pac-12 Networks, with Rich Burk on the call. Fans can also follow along with live stats - available through UCLABruins.com - as well as on Twitter at @UCLAMSoccer.

IN THE RANKINGS
This week, UCLA appeared as high as No. 19 in the rankings (TopDrawer) while also showing up in the polls for Soccer America (No. 20) and College Soccer News (No. 22). The Bruins received votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll while being placed No. 5 in the Far West Region poll. This is the second straight week UCLA has been ranked. Washington is ranked No. 12 in the country, meaning the Bruins will have played a ranked team in four of their first seven games, all against top-15 opponents.

WEEK IN REVIEW
UCLA went 1-1 last week, dropping a 5-1 decision to then-No. 6 Georgetown at home on Monday before rebounding for a 4-2 victory on the road at CSUN on Sunday night. The battle in Northridge started a three-game road swing for the Bruins.

HOT START FOR MILAN ILOSKI
UCLA junior forward Milan Iloski has come firing out of the gate so far in 2019, recording seven goals and two assists for 16 points over a five-game scoring streak. That streak includes a hat trick against Maryland and a five-point performance at CSUN. Some notes on his torrid start to the season:
  • Enters the week tied with three others for the national lead in goals
  • Is tied with St. Mary's Anders Engebretsen for the national lead in both goals per game (1.4) and points per game (3.2)
  • Is one point off the national lead in points (CSUN's Daniel Trejo has 17)
  • First Bruin with seven goals over the first five games of a season since 2000 (McKinley Tennyson Jr.)
  • First Bruin this millennium with 16 points over the first five games of a season
  • First Bruin with a three-game goal-scoring streak since 2015
  • No Bruin since 2015 (Seyi Adekoya - 12) has had more single-season goals than his current 7
  • Earned national, Pac-12, and UCLA Player of the Week honors after his hat trick against Maryland

ILOSKI TO ILOSKI
Junior midfielder Eric Iloski helped set up his brother Milan's opening goal against CSUN. That helper represented the second time this season that Eric earned the primary assist on a Milan goal. It was also the third time that Eric and Milan have both recorded a point on the same goal - Milan and elder brother Brian assisted on an Eric goal against San Diego State on Oct. 15, 2017.

ILOSKIS IN A GROVE
One of the Iloski brothers - forward Milan or midfielder Eric - has recorded at least one point in all seven of UCLA's games so far this year (preseason included). Milan has scored in games against Westmont, Northwestern, Georgetown, Maryland, and CSUN while recording assists against Indiana and the Matadors. Eric scored the lone goal against Omaha in the preseason, assisted on Milan's first goal against UMD, then posted a career-best three-point game against CSUN on Sept. 15.

POWELL TABBED TO PRESEASON ALL-PAC-12 TEAM
Redshirt senior midfielder/defender Matthew Powell was named to the 2019 Preseason All-Pac-12 Team ahead of the new season. Powell was one of just three defenders to make the conference's preseason Best XI. The Castro Valley, Calif. native was an All-Pac-12 second team choice in 2018 after receiving an all-conference honorable mention as a sophomore in 2017. A mainstay of the defensive corps last year, Powell was one of just three Bruins to start all 19 of the team's games. Spending time at both center back and holding mid, Powell played the full 90 in all but three games and ended the year with 1,670 minutes of action, third-most on the team.

BRUINS IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE
Former UCLA players Reggie Cannon and Jackson Yueill as well as current volunteer assistant coach Walker Zimmerman were all named to the 26-man roster for the U.S. Men's National Team in late August. Zimmerman and Cannon both started in the USMNT's battle against Mexico on Sept. 6, while Yueill appeared as a substitute. Then in the US's battle against Uruguay on Sept. 10, both Cannon and Yueill drew starts. Cannon has accrued eight caps with the senior team, including a start at right back in the 2019 Gold Cup final against Mexico. Yueill has three caps, all coming in 2019. Zimmerman, an LAFC defender, has scored twice over 11 career games with Team USA.

HOME COOKING
Starting on Sept. 26, UCLA will play a season-high eight consecutive games at home. That is the longest homestand for the program since at least 1980 (home-away designations are unavailable prior to 1980). Once that stretch begins, the Bruins don't play another road game until they head to Berkeley for a matchup against Cal on Halloween.

SUNDQUIST SETTING IT UP
Sophomore midfielder Cody Sundquist has had a nice start to the 2019 campaign, recording points in four of five games to this point of the season for a total of five points (one goal, three assists). His three apples are a team-high and rank fourth in the Pac-12 Conference. The Granite Bay, Calif. native recorded his first goal of the season and second of his career against CSUN on Sept. 15, a tally which held up as the game-winner. Both of his career goals have been game-winners.

FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET
UCLA currently ranks second in the Pac-12 and 29th in the country with a 2.00 goals per game average. The Bruins have posted an average of two goals or better in a season just once in the last 16 years.

GARCES MAKING STOPS
UCLA sophomore keeper Justin Garces enters the weekend with the Pac-12 lead in saves at 20. The Miami, Fla. native - who entered the year with a single-game career-high of fives saves - has made four or more stops in three of UCLA's five games this year, including a career-high seven in the season-opener against Northwestern. He was the Pac-12 Player of the Week after making 11 saves over two games in the IU/Adidas Credit Union Classic to open the year.

MILAN ILOSKI RECORDS HAT TRICK IN WIN OVER MARYLAND
Milan Iloski scored a career-high three goals to power UCLA to a 3-2 win over then-No. 1 Maryland on Sept. 6. It was UCLA's first hat trick since Chandler Hoffman had one on Sept. 16, 2011. The offensive outburst helped the Bruins earn their first win over a top-ranked team since beating Akron 6-1 on Sept. 5, 2016 and the team's first triumph over a defending national champ since topping Indiana 1-0 on Sept. 1, 2013.

TOUGH TESTS
Over the first three games of September, UCLA played three straight games against top-10 opponents (No.  2 Indiana, No. 1 Maryland, No. 6 Georgetown). The three-game span represented:
  • First time playing a ranked team in three straight games since Oct. 16-23, 2014 (No. 1 Washington, No. 17 Oregon State No. 2 Washington
  • First time playing top-10 teams in three straight games since Nov. 19-Dec. 2, 2006 (No. 9 Clemson, No. 1 Duke, No. 3 Virginia - all in the NCAA Tournament)
BATTLING THE BEAVERS
The Bruins are 34-6-3 all-time against Oregon State and had a six-game winning steak against the Beavers until falling 4-3 in overtime last year in Corvallis. UCLA has never lost a season series against OSU. The Bruins are 12-6-1 all-time in 19 trips to Corvallis. The two teams split the series last year, with UCLA winning 1-0 at home and losing in an overtime heartbreaker on the road. Since-graduated midfielder Kike Poleo had a late-winner against the Beavers, breaking a scoreless deadlock with a 79th minute tally. Milan Iloski put the Bruins up 2-1 on the road last year with a goal off a free kick, but OSU eventually tied it 3-3 before winning it on a Don Tchilao breakaway goal in the 93rd minute.

HANDLING THE HUSKIES
UCLA has a 30-16-4 all-time record against Washington, but hasn't won a season series against the Huskies since 2015. The two teams split series in 2017 and 2018, with UW sweeping in 2016. The Bruins are 13-8-2 against Washington in Seattle, but have gone 12-3-2 in 17 road matchups since 2002. Last year, Milan Iloski scored a dead ball goal in the 23rd minute to lead the Bruins to a 1-0 win over Washington at home. UCLA lost 2-0 to the Huskies on the road, with UW scoring a pair of late second-half goals after the Bruins had to play most of the second half down a man following a 52nd minute red card to Joab Santoyo

NICE TO MEET YOU
Eight of UCLA's 10 newcomers have made their Bruin debuts so far. Marcony Pimentel, Constantinos Michaelides, Ben Reveno, and Ruben Soria are currently in starting roles while Riley Ferch, Jefferson Alade, Luke Bone, and Ollie de Visser have all appeared as substitutes.

UCLA100
UCLA will celebrate its first 100 years with a year-long university-wide Centennial Celebration. UCLA Athletics has several Centennial Celebration plans and giveaways in store for designated home events, including a set of 13 Centennial Pins highlighting each sport, as well as a souvenir mosaic poster that features personal photos submitted by UCLA fans. Men's soccer will hold its Centennial game on Sept. 26 against UC Irvine.

JEFFERSON ALADE INCLUDED ON TOP DRAWER'S PRESEASON FRESHMAN BEST XI
UCLA freshman forward Jefferson Alade was tabbed to the TopDrawerSoccer Preseason Freshman Best XI before the start of the new season. He was one of just three forwards listed among the XI. A product of the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy, Alade scored 36 goals over 83 career games with the club. He saw his productivity go up as he got older, culminating in a career-high 15 scores last year in 31 games.

2018 IN REVIEW
The Bruins posted a 10-9-0 overall record last year, qualifying for the 2018 NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid. UCLA was eliminated in the first round in a road contest at Portland. The Bruins were 5-5-0 in Pac-12 play, good for fourth place in the conference. UCLA was 4-1-0 at one point in conference action, but closed the season by losing four of five against league foes. Top scorers included Matt Hundley (17 points), Mohammed Kamara (11), and Milan Iloski (8), who missed the early part of the season due to an emergency appendectomy. The Bruins had two players selected in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, including No. 1 overall pick Frankie Amaya, who went to FC Cincinnati. Midfielder Anderson Asiedu was selected 24th overall by Atlanta.
