LA QUINTA, Calif. – Four members of the UCLA men's tennis team finished their time at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic on Saturday at the La Quinta Resort & Club, bridging the gap between fall tournament play and spring dual matches.
The Bruins will play their initial dual match on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Los Angeles Tennis Center, where they will host BYU. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m., PT.
Sophomore Roscoe Bellamy, junior Connor Hance, redshirt freshman Blaine Hovenier and redshirt junior Connor Rapp took part in NCTC play on Friday and Saturday. Both doubles teams earned semifinal-round berths, while Bellamy reached the singles semifinal round.
After earning byes through the first round, the doubles pairs fought through varying degrees of difficulty to earn quarterfinal-round wins. Hance and Hovenier edged a pair of Pac-12 foes, defeating Christian Lerby and George Stoupe of Arizona State by an 8-7 score. Second-seeded Bellamy and Rapp, meanwhile, had an easier go of it against a Fresno State pair. The Bruins rolled to an 8-3 defeat of Alexey Aleschev and Cagatay Soke to ensure half the final four would be from UCLA.
The journeys would end there for the doubles teams, however, as Hance/Hovenier fell to top-seeded Simon Arca Costas and Blake Bayldon of Boise State, 8-4, and Bellamy/Rapp withdrew.
In the singles bracket, Bellamy and Rapp earned first-round byes. Hance defeated Arca Costas, 6-4, 6-2, while Hovenier fell to ASU's William Kirkman by the same 6-4, 6-2 score.
The round of 16 saw Rapp suffer a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Paul Giraud of San Francisco, while Hance fell to Aleschev in a close one, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 1-0 (10-5). Bellamy took care of business against Bayldon, 6-4, 7-5, before earning a spot in the semifinals by way of withdrawal. There, he would come up short against Boise State's Kyryll Kryvchun, who posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory to reach the final round.
