No. 4 Women's Tennis Blanks Minnesota in Opener

LOS ANGELES – The No. 4 UCLA women's tennis team made quick work of Minnesota, registering a 4-0 win in Friday's ITA Kickoff Weekend first-round match at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Bruins (1-0) will host Loyola Marymount Saturday at 3 p.m., PT with a trip to next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago on the line.
Sophomore Taylor Johnson clinched the victory in straight sets. Newcomers Abbey Forbes and Annette Goulak won their UCLA debuts without surrendering more than two games in any of the sets they played. The trio of Johnson, Forbes and Goulak also picked up doubles wins.
Johnson and junior Abi Altick, who teamed to win their final nine dual matches as a pair in 2019, got off on the right foot in 2020. The duo rolled to a 6-1 defeat of Ekin Ercetin and Dalila Said on Court 2. Then, with sophomore Elysia Bolton and freshman Sasha Vagramov nearing a win of their own on Court 3, Forbes and Goulak dispatched of Cammy Frei and Tina Kreinis on the top court, 6-2. The ITA Southwest Regional champions have won seven of their eight matches since the fall.
Sixth-ranked Forbes could not be stopped in her first singles dual match, giving up just two first-set games to Tiffany Huber before cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win on Court 2. The victory improved Forbes' overall record to 13-2. No. 99 Goulak seized her seventh win in a row since fall play, meanwhile, defeating Ercetin on Court 4, 6-2, 6-2.
With No. 14 Bolton and No. 108 Vagramov each tied at five games apiece with a set under her belt, Johnson snuck in to seal the deal on Court 6. The Prescott, Ariz. native took care of business against Juliet Zhang, 6-2, 6-3.
The Golden Gophers (1-2) will take on Gonzaga in Saturday's consolation match, set to begin at 6 p.m.
