- Gerrit Cole, RHP, New York Yankees – Cole toed the rubber for New York in the winner-take-all game five of the American League Division Series against Tampa Bay, limiting the Rays to one hit and one run while striking out nine over 5 1/3 innings. Tampa would eventually win the game 2-1 to advance to the ALCS, with Cole receiving a no-decision. Signed this offseason to the richest contract in MLB history for a pitcher (nine years, $324 million), Cole delivered in his first postseason with the Yankees, going 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings spanning three starts. For the 2020 regular season, he was the league leader in complete games (2) and shutouts (1) while ranking in the top-10 in wins (second), strikeouts (third), WHIP (0.96, fourth), and ERA (sixth).
- Dave Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, had led his club to the National League Championship Series after sweeping the Brewers in the Wild Card series and the Padres in the NLDS. Los Angeles is the No. 1 overall seed in the National League after recording an MLB-best 43-17 record during the 2020 regular season.
- Jordin Canada, G, Seattle Storm – Jordin Canada ('18) won her second title in three years as the Seattle Storm swept the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA Finals. She scored 15 points off the bench and added five rebounds and three assists in the closeout game on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
- Seattle Associate Head Coach Noelle Quinn ('07) won her first WNBA title as an Associate Head Coach. Quinn won a WNBA Championship with the Storm in her final season as a player in 2018.
- Ka'imi Fairbairn, K, Houston Texans – Since missing his first field-goal attempt of the season in Week 1, Fairbairn has made nine consecutive tries. He converted from 36, 33 and 46 yards and was successful on all three of his extra-point attempts in Houston's first win of the season Sunday. Six of Fairbairn's seven kickoffs went for touchbacks.
- Darnay Holmes, CB, New York Giants – Holmes was all over the field in his second-career start. The rookie piled up three total tackles, including half a sack, and added one QB hit. He also posted two passes defensed, including one in his own end zone.
- Datone Jones, DE, Las Vegas Raiders – Promoted from the Las Vegas practice squad Saturday, Jones made two tackles in the Raiders' 40-32 road win over defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City.
- Joshua Kelley, RB, Los Angeles Chargers – Kelley logged 11 carries for 29 yards in a "Monday Night Football" contest at New Orleans. The rookie also caught one pass for nine yards and registered one tackle on special teams.
- Eric Kendricks, MLB, Minnesota Vikings – Kendricks made eight total tackles and sits in a three-way tie atop the league leaderboard with 53 combined stops.
- Cassius Marsh, DE, Jacksonville Jaguars – Marsh posted one tackle. He has contributed at least one stop in each game he has played this season.
- Jacob Tuioti-Mariner, DT, Atlanta Falcons – Tuioti-Mariner posted one tackle to take his season total to eight.
- Kenny Young, ILB, Los Angeles Rams – Starter Young registered five tackles for the Rams, who improved to 4-1 with a 30-10 win at Washington.
- OT Andre James (Las Vegas Raiders), OT Conor McDermott (New York Jets), DE Takkarist McKinley (Atlanta Falcons), OT Kolton Miller (Las Vegas Raiders), CB Fabian Moreau (Washington Football Team), C Scott Quessenberry (Los Angeles Chargers), OG Alex Redmond (Cincinnati Bengals) also played, but did not record any statistics.
- ILB Jayon Brown, DE Matt Dickerson and the Tennessee Titans will conclude Week 5 action when they host the Buffalo Bills Tuesday (4 p.m., PT on CBS) in a meeting of undefeated teams. The game was previously scheduled for Sunday.
- PGA Tour – Patrick Cantlay tied for eighth (-18) at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas last week. Cantlay, as well as the TOUR, will remain in Las Vegas this week for The CJ Cup at Shadow Creek (Thursday-Sunday).
- PGA Tour Champions – Brandt Jobe (-6, T-14) was the top UCLA finisher at the SAS Championship in Cary, N.C. last week. The Tour is in Richmond, Va. this week (Friday-Sunday) for the Dominion Energy Charity Classic. Jobe, Scott McCarron, Steve Pate, Corey Pavin, Tom Pernice, Jr., Ken Tanigawa and Duffy Waldorf are in the field.
- Korn Ferry Tour – Jake Knapp (-13) tied for 30th at the season-ending Orange County National Championship in Winter Garden, Fla.
- European Tour – Pedro Figueiredo is in the field at this week's Scottish Championship (Thursday-Sunday) in St. Andrews, Scotland.
- LPGA Tour – Alison Lee (T-69) and Patty Tavatanakit (74th) both made the cut at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship last week in Newtown Square, Pa. The Tour is off this week.
- Symetra Tour – After a week off, the Tour heads to Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. for the Mission Inn Resort and Club Championship (Thursday-Saturday). Stephanie Kono and Lilia Vu are both in the field.
- Frankie Amaya, MF, FC Cincinnati – Started both of FC Cincinnati's games last week. He's made 16 appearances – all starts – and scored his first professional goal this year.
- Jonathan Bornstein, D, Chicago Fire – Started and played the full 90 in both of Chicago's games over the last week.
- Abu Danladi, F, Nashville SC – Subbed on in both of Nashville's games last week, playing a total of 76 minutes. The pair of appearances marked a return to action for Danladi, who had missed four consecutive games due to injury.
- Reggie Cannon, D, Boavista FC (Portugal) – Did not appear last week due to the international break in the European club soccer schedule. Cannon has started all three games for Boavista since transferring from FC Dallas last month, with the club taking away points in two of those three contests. He scored his first goal with Boavista in his club debut on Sept. 12 (exhibition vs. CD Tondela).
- Jordan Harvey, D, LAFC – Was named Man of the Match for LAFC's 3-1 win over Seattle on Oct. 11. His most impressive contribution was a 57th minute goal line clearance – heading away a hard-struck shot following a Seattle set piece – that preserved a 1-0 lead for LAFC at the time. Seattle's only goal came on a free kick late in the second half.
- Ryan Hollingshead, D, FC Dallas – Started and played the full 90 FC Dallas's game against Houston on Oct. 7, taking a career-high five shots.
- Erik Holt, D, Real Salt Lake – Started at center back and played the full 90 in RSL's game against Seattle on Oct. 7. The appearance marked the first time this season he started back-to-back games.
- Andy Rose, MF, Vancouver Whitecaps – Started and played 52 minutes against San Jose on Oct. 7.
- Kelyn Rowe, MF, New England Revolution – Subbed on in both of New England's games last week, playing a total of 53 minutes.
- Jackson Yueill, MF, San Jose Earthquakes – Started and played the full 90 in both of San Jose's games last week as the Earthquakes went 1-0-1. Off the field, Yueill inked a multi-year extension with San Jose.
- Megan Oyster, D, Houston Dash; Sydney Leroux, F, Orlando Pride (NWSL) - Houston wrapped up its Fall Series with a 2-1 win over Orlando. Oyster started and played 85 minutes. Leroux scored her first NWSL goal in two years in the 47th minute.
- Sarah Woldmoe, MF, Sky Blue FC; Zoey Goralski, D, Chicago Red Stars (NWSL) - In both team's final Fall Series match, Woldmoe started and played the full 90, while Goralski played the final 36 minutes of Sky Blue's 3-1 victory on Oct. 10.
- Taylor Smith, D, Rosie White, MF, OL Reign (NWSL) - Smith and White were second-half subs in OL Reign's 2-1 loss to Portland on Oct. 10.
- Sam Mewis, MF, Manchester City; Jessie Fleming, MF, Chelsea FC (England) – Mewis started and played the full 90 in a 3-1 loss to Chelsea FC on Oct. 11. Mewis nearly scored the game's first goal in the 25th minute, but her shot hit the left post. Fleming was an unused sub.
- Lauren Barnes, D, & Hailie Mace, F, Kristianstads DFF (Sweden) – Mace scored the game-winning goal in a 6-0 Svenska Cupen victory over IFO Bromolla IF on Oct. 7. Kristianstads played again on Oct. 11, with Barnes and Mace starting in a 2-1 win over Rosengård.
- Siri Ervik, GK, Kolbotn (Norway) – Ervik started in goal in a 1-0 loss in the NM Cup to Rosenborg Kvinner on Oct. 7.
- Teagan Micah, GK, Arna-Bjørnar (Norway) – Arna- Bjørnar defeated KIL/Hemne 2-0 in the NM Cup on Oct. 7.
- Darian Jenkins, F, Bordeaux (France) – Jenkins, who started and played the full 90, recorded an assist in Bordeaux's 6-1 win over FC Fleury 91 on Oct. 10.
- Anika Rodriguez, MF, PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) – Rodriguez was an unused sub in PSV's 5-2 win over PEC Zwolle on Oct. 9.
- Kaiya McCullough, D, FC Würzburger Kickers (Germany) – McCullough played the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt II on Oct. 10.
- Maxime Cressy – Cressy backed up his initial French Open appearance with one at Internazionali di Tennis Emilia Romagna, another clay-court tournament in Parma, Italy. His first-round match went the distance, but qualifier Alexandre Muller of France came out on top of a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 decision.
- Marcos Giron – Giron followed his first Roland-Garros win at bett1HULKS Indoors in Cologne, Germany. Giron handed Rudolf Molleker of Germany a 6-4, 6-3 loss in qualifying before falling to Lloyd Harris of South Africa in three sets. Even with the loss, Giron found himself slotted at a career-best No. 90 in the newest ATP rankings Monday.
- Mackenzie McDonald – McDonald also took his game indoors, pulling double duty at the St. Petersburg (Russia) Open. In doubles play, McDonald and partner J.J. Wolf were edged by James Duckworth/Ilya Ivashka, 6-7(6), 6-1, 1-0(5). McDonald's singles outing was also a nail biter, as he dropped a 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 decision to Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.
- Ena Shibahara – Shibahara reached the first quarterfinal round of her Grand Slam career, as she teamed with Shuko Aoyama to win three matches before falling to Alexa Guarachi/Desirae Krawczyk by a 6-0, 6-4 score.
