BRUINS IN THE PROS:ย WEEK OF SEPT. 29 โ€“ OCT. 5
ย
BASEBALL
  • Trevor Bauer, RHP, Cincinnati Reds โ€“ Bauer closed his sensational 2020 season with a final masterpiece, as he limited the Atlanta Braves to two hits and no runs while striking out 12 over 7 2/3 innings in game one of the Wild Card Series on Sept. 30. His dozen Ks set a new Cincinnati postseason franchise record for a single game โ€“ the franchise has been alive since 1882. Bauer's exploits weren't enough unfortunately as Cincinnati dropped the game 1-0 in 13 innings before losing game two, and the best-of-three series, the following day. A pending free agent, Bauer is considered one of the frontrunners for the 2020 NL Cy Young Award, as he led the league in ERA (1.73), shutouts (2), complete games (2), WHIP (0.80), and hits allowed per nine innings (5.1) during the regular season. He recorded exactly 100 strikeouts to finish second in the league in that stat. His adjusted ERA was 276, the fifth-highest in single-season MLB history.
  • Gerrit Cole, RHP, New York Yankees โ€“ Signed this offseason to the richest contract in MLB history for a pitcher (nine years, $324 million), Cole has delivered in his first two postseason starts for the Yankees, earning the win in both games and helping his club to early 1-0 series leads. His sterling start in game one of the Wild Card series against Cleveland โ€“ seven innings, two earned, 13 strikeouts โ€“ got the Yankees out on the right foot en route to a two-game sweep. He toed the rubber again for game one of the American League Division Series against Tampa Bay on Oct. 5, delivering a quality start (six innings, three earned, eight strikeouts) as New York claimed a 9-3 victory. For the 2020 regular season, he was the league leader in complete games (2) and shutouts (1) while ranking in the top-10 in wins (second), strikeouts (third), WHIP (0.96, fourth), and ERA (sixth).
  • Dave Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, had led his club to the National League Division Series after sweeping the Brewers in two games during the Wild Card Series. Los Angeles is the No. 1 overall seed in the National League after recording an MLB-best 43-17 record during the 2020 regular season. The Dodgers open their best-of-five divisional series against the San Diego Padres on Oct. 6 at 6:38 p.m. PT (TV: FS1).
