Canning Earns Gold Glove Award

November 03, 2020 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – Former UCLA right-hander and current Los Angeles Angels pitcher Griffin Canning was named the American League Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner at his position, it was announced on Tuesday night. This marks the first career Gold Glove for Canning, who spent his first full season in the Majors in 2020.

Canning is the third Bruin ever to win a Gold Glove and the first since Brandon Crawford (San Francisco Giants, SS) won three in a row from 2015-17. Chris Chambliss (New York Yankees, 1B) became the first Bruin to earn a Gold Glove in 1978.

For the 2020 season, Canning recorded seven assists and eight putouts while committing one error for a .938 fielding percentage. He was tied for second in the AL in assists by a pitcher and tied for third in AL putouts by a pitcher. Among AL pitchers in 2020, Canning tied with Boston's Nathan Eovaldi for the lead in defensive runs saved above average with three.

The other finalists for the AL gold glove at pitcher were Kenta Maeda (Minnesota) and Zach Plesac (Cleveland).

On the mound, Canning was 2-3 this season with a 3.99 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings. He has a 4.36 career ERA over 29 appearances (28 starts).
