MVB Blocks Its Way Past Long Beach St.

The No. 8 UCLA men's volleyball team (5-3) handed No. 4 Long Beach State (5-1) its first loss of the season in four sets in non-league action at Long Beach on Saturday night. Scores of the match were 25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23. It marked Long Beach's first regular-season home loss since March of 2016. Freshman Cole Ketrzynski led the attack with a season-high tying 17 kills. Captain Matt Younggren added a career-high seven blocks to lead UCLA which owned a 14.0 to 3.0 advantage on the block for the match. Each player had five kills each in the decisive fourth set. The Bruins play next at No. 2 BYU on Thursday night in the first MPSF conference match of the season.
In set one, UCLA moved out to an early 4-2 lead. Long Beach answered with the next six points to go in front 4-8. The Beach continued in the lead at 9-12 when UCLA began to battle back. UCLA cut the gap to one at 14-15 on a kill by Alex Knight. The Bruins stayed within one at 16-17, 17-18, 18-19, 19-20, 20-21, 21-22, 22-23 before leveling the score at 23-all on a Knight kill off hands. Knight / Younggren followed with a block for UCLA's first lead since the beginning of the set. Knight then delivered the set with a kill for a 25-23 win. UCLA hit .310 for the frame.
UCLA grabbed a 4-1 lead to start set two. Long Beach came back to tie the score at 4-all. With the score even at 7-all, Ketrzynski banged out back-to-back kills for a 9-7 edge. UCLA built the margin to 14-10 on a kill by Grant Maleski. A four-point run, with kills from Austin Matautia and Knight to go with blocks by Matuatia/Younggren and Mads Kyed Jensen/Younggren, put the Bruins in charge at 20-13. UCLA closed out the set at 25-18 while hitting .611. The Beach hit .000, with eight errors.
The Bruins took the early lead again in set three, at 8-5, after back-to-back swings from Younggren. The Beach sliced the margin to 9-8, but UCLA responded to go up 14-9 after a kill and a block by Kyed Jensen. Long Beach closed to 15-14 and then evened the score at 18-all. A mini run put the Beach up 20-23. Ketrzynski saved one set point, but the Beach hung on for a 22-25 win. UCLA hit .100 for the set to .345 for Long Beach.
UCLA moved up 6-5 on a kill from Knight in the early stages of set four. The Beach came back to run out in front 9-11. A Sam Burgi kill evened the score at 11-all. Another Burgi kill lifted UCLA into the lead at 15-14. With the score level at 16, kills by Ketrzynski and Younggren were followed up by a block by Kyed Jensen/Younggren for a 19-16 UCLA advantage. The Beach closed to within one, at 22-21, but a Ketrzynski kill put the Bruins at match point, 24-22. Younggren's kill ended the match at 25-23.
