MVB Drops MPSF Conference Opener

The No. 7 UCLA men's volleyball team (5-4, 0-1) fell in three sets in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) opener at No. 2 BYU (11-0, 1-0) on Thursday night in Provo, Utah. Scores of the match were 29-31, 12-25, 23-25. The Bruins were outhit .256 to .373 by the Cougars and had 18 service errors on the night. Cole Ketrzynski topped the Bruin attack with 11 kills for his fifth-straight double-digit kill performance. UCLA will travel to play at No. 13 Stanford on Saturday night in a MPSF match which will be televised on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Bay Area at 7 p.m.
In set one, the Bruins fell behind 1-3 and then rallied to pull within one, at 5-6, after an ace from Daenan Gyimah. BYU then opened up an 8-11 gap. A kill and a block by Ketrzynski helped UCLA even the score at 11-all. After BYU moved back in front 14-17, UCLA rallied with three straight points --- Alex Knight kill, BYU error, Mads Kyed Jensen/Matt Youggren block. The score was then tied at points 18 through 29 with UCLA saving seven set points along the way. Ketrzynski and Knight supplied a couple of key kills along the way, but BYU put two points together at the end on a kill and a Bruin error to take the set 29-31. UCLA hit .297 to BYU's .333.
BYU stormed out to a 1-5 lead to begin the second set and built the margin up to 8-15. The Bruins had no answers as they recorded just four kills with five errors on 15 swings for a -0.067 attack percentage for the frame. BYU hit .714 in the set, winning 12-25.
The Bruins took a 4-2 lead in set three. After UCLA went up 5-4, the Cougars came back with the next four points to move in front 5-8. With BYU ahead 7-11, the Bruins staged a rally with four of the next five points to slice the margin to 11-12. Ketrzynski, Knight and Kyed Jensen came through with kills during the run. A Gyimah kill and a Cougar service error helped UCLA level the score at 14-each. The Bruins tied the score at 15 after another Gyimah kill and then at 17 after a Ketrzynski swing, but could not find the lead. BYU responded by tallying five of the next six points for an 18-22 advantage. UCLA cut the deficit to one, at 22-23, following a Gyimah smash, but the Cougars had enough left to earn a 23-25 win and the match.
Ketrzynski hit .318 for the match while Gyimah added seven kills (.429), an ace and three blocks. Younggren finished with five kills and hit .714. BYU recorded four aces, while the Bruins managed a season-low one. The Cougars finished with eight total blocks to six for UCLA.
