UCLA Suffers 4-1 Loss to Texas A&M at Indoors

MADISON, Wis. โ The No. 16 UCLA men's tennis team lost an ITA National Team Indoor Championships consolation match to No. 7 Texas A&M, 4-1, on Saturday morning at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Bruins (4-4) will finish their time at the tournament Sunday, when they take on No. 10 NC State or No. 11 TCU.
Sophomore Mathew Tsolakyan, who was making his 2020 dual-match debut on Court 6, logged UCLA's only win of the day. The Aggies (5-2) picked up singles victories on Courts 2, 3 and 5 after capturing the doubles point.
The duo of sophomore Govind Nanda and junior Keegan Smith dropped its first match since Jan. 31, as Carlos Aguilar and Barnaby Smith registered a 6-3 win on Court 1 to tip the doubles scales in favor of Texas A&M. A break of serve by the Aggies at 4-3 proved to be the difference.
With the Court-2 match yet to be decided, Pierce Rollins and Stafan Storch of Texas A&M clinched the doubles point on Court 3. The pair's match against junior Bryce Pereira and sophomore Patrick Zahraj stayed on serve until 5-4, when it broke for the day's first point.
Barnaby Smith made it 2-0 on Court 5, as he knocked off Zahraj by a 6-4, 6-2 score. On the next court over, though, Tsolakyan quickly cut the Bruins' deficit in half with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Guido Marson. The victory marked the Glendale, Calif. native's first since October's UCSB Classic.
One day removed from his first ranked win, freshman Drew Baird of UCLA could not repeat his feat against No. 3 Valentin Vacherot on Court 3. Vacherot narrowly won the first set before finishing up a 7-5, 6-3 result.
No. 10 Nanda suffered his second close loss to a ranked opponent in a row, as No. 34 Aguilar clinched the overall decision on Court 2. Aguilar completed his 6-4, 7-5 victory with two other matches in the middle of a second-set tiebreaker. Keegan Smith was one point away from a win on Court 1.
