MVB Tops Trojans in MPSF Clash

February 16, 2020 | Men's Volleyball

The No. 8 UCLA men's volleyball team (7-5, 2-2) fought back from a first-set defeat to topple the Trojans (2-11, 0-4) in four on Sunday evening in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the contest were (23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-19). Cole Ketryznski, with 15 kills (.333), and Daenan Gyimah, with 14 (.600), led the Bruin attack which outhit USC by a .391 to .212 margin and out blocked the Trojans 10.5 to 1.0. Cole Pender added eight kills, four digs and three blocks for UCLA which will host No. 3 UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday night in a non-conference match to be played at 7 p.m. in Pauley.

In set one, UCLA moved out to a 10-7 advantage after a block by Cole Pender / Matt Younggren. The Bruins led 17-13 following a kill from Ketrzynski. The Trojans then scored five of the next six points to pull even at 18-all. After the Bruin went in front 20-18 on kills by Pender and Mads Kyed Jensen, USC rallied to level the score at 21. The Trojans opened up a 21-23 edge and went on to take the initial set 23-25. Ketrzynski totaled nine kills in the set, but was not enough offset a tough USC serve which notched four aces for the frame. Both teams hit over .400.

UCLA took a 10-8 lead in set two after an ace from Daenan Gyimah and a kill from Kyed Jensen broke an 8-all tie. The Bruins upped the gap to 17-13 on a couple of Pender kills. USC rallied to close to within one, at 18-17, but the Bruins opened up a 23-18 gap sparked by back-to-back aces from Kyed Jensen. UCLA finished out the set for a 25-22 win.

The Bruins kept up the pressure on the attack in set three and opened up a 10-5 lead after a swing from Gyimah. UCLA registered the next four points as well to take a 14-5 lead after another Pender kill. Gyimah's straight down kill handed the set to the Bruins at 25-14. UCLA hit .381 for the set to -.080 for USC, which had eight hitting errors.

In set four, UCLA grabbed a 7-3 early lead. USC roared back to even the score at 8-all. The score was then tied at points 12, 13 and 14 before a Ketrzynski kill and an Austin Matautia ace put the Bruins up 16-14. A Pender / Gyimah block lifted the Bruins into a 20-15 edge. Back-to-back swings from Ketrzynski made it 24-17 and a Trojan service error delivered set point for the Bruins at 25-19.
