MVB Goes Down to No. 3 Gauchos in Three

The No. 8 UCLA men's volleyball team (7-6, 2-2) dropped a non-league decision to No. 3 UC Santa Barbara (9-2) on Wednesday night in Westwood. Scores of the match were 23-25, 22-25, 18-25. The Bruins hit a season-low .169 percentage on the night. Daenan Gyimah led UCLA with nine kills, two blocks and an ace. On Friday, the Bruins will return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) action with a 5 p.m. (PT) match at No. 13 Grand Canyon (10-3, 2-1).
In set one, UCLA trailed early by 2-7. The Bruins mounted a rally behind the serve of Austin Matautia to tally five of the next six points and close to 7-8. UCSB then opened up an 8-12 gap. A block from Matautia / Younggren and a pair of kills from Brandon Rattray helped narrow the margin to 15-17. Cole Pender's swing off hands and a UCSB error evened the score at 17-all. Rattray delivered another kill for an 18-17 lead. The next three points belonged to the visitors who moved to an 18-20 advantage. The Bruins never regained the lead and fell 23-25, unable to survive 10 hitting errors and seven service errors in the set.
After the Bruins grabbed an early 3-0 edge, UCSB answered and evened the score at points 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Gyimah tied the score at 11-all with an ace and again at 15-all with a kill. Santa Barbara snapped a 16-all tie with three straight points. The Bruins narrowed the margin to 22-23 on another Gyimah kill, but UCSB closed out the set for a 22-25 win.
The Bruins opened set three by once again taking the first three points. With UCLA up 5-4, Santa Barbara utilized a strong service game to help run off the next six points. After another ace, the Gauchos owned a 7-15 advantage. Grant Maleski served the Bruins closer as UCLA cut a 10-19 lead to 13-19. However, it was as close as they would get as UCSB finished off the match for a 18-25 win. The Bruins hit .083 for the frame.
UCSB outhit the Bruins for the match .267 to .169. The teams each had four service aces. Santa Barbara owned a 6.0 to 5.5 edge in total blocks. Pender, Gyimah, Maleski and Mads Kyed Jensen each recorded aces for the Bruins.
