MVB Falls in Four at No. 13 GCU

The No. 8 UCLA men's volleyball team (7-7, 2-3) dropped a four-setter at No. 13 Grand Canyon (11-3, 3-1) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played on Friday night in Phoenix. Scores of the contest were 25-20, 17-25, 23-25, 19-25. GCU, ranked third in the nation in aces/set entering the week, racked up a Bruin opponent season-best 11 aces on the night. UCLA Hit .330 for the match, but the home team managed a .379 mark.
In set one, UCLA moved out to a 6-3 advantage. The Bruins led 12-10 following a swing by Cole Ketrzynski and upped the margin to 15-11 after a block by Ketrzynski/Matt Younggren. GCU closed to 19-16, but UCLA rallied to expand the gap to 22-16 on an ace by Cole Pender. A Ketrzynski kill ended the set at 25-20 for the Bruins, who hit .417 for the frame.
In set two, the Bruins evened the score at 6-all on a block by Younggren and at 8-all after a Ketrzynski kill. Grand Canyon then used a strong serve to rip off the next six points of the set. Back-to-back GCU aces pushed them ahead 12-20 on the way to a 17-25 win. The Lopes had five aces for the set while the Bruins hit .188.
In set three, GCU grabbed a 1-5 lead to begin play. UCLA closed to 4-6 after a Ketrzynski kill, but GCU rebounded for a 8-13 lead after another ace. A Bruin ace by Daenan Gyimah narrowed the gap to 12-15 and a Gyimah kill made it 17-19. Ketrzynski followed with a kill and Gyimah with a block to even the score at 19-all. Bruin kills tied the score at 20, 21, 22 and 23 but GCU put two kills together to end the set at 23-25.
Grand Canyon scored the first four points of set four on the way to building a 5-12 advantage. Back-to-back aces by J.R. Norris IV helped UCLA close to 8-12. The 'Lopes registered four of the next five points to build the margin back up to 9-16. A kill by Norris and block by Norris / Brandon Rattray cut the gap to 16-20. However, three of the next four points went to GCU for a 17-23 advantage on the way to a 19-25 win.
